Baird Ganko Oyaji ("Stubborn Old Man") Barley Wine gains its depth and complexity from simple enough sources -- i.e. a grist bill featuring just English Marris Otter pale ale and caramel malts (as well as a hint of Japanese candy sugar), and a hop bill highlighting English Fuggles. The hedonistic pleasure plays out oxymoronically -- i.e. bitter and sweet, heavy and light, exhilarating and exhausting.

Draft at Baird Nakameguro Taproom. Pours copper, somewhat hazy, nice foamy top, reduces soon. Aroma is sweetish, honey, fruit marmalade. taste is full, warming, surprisingly fragrant for such a big beer. Autumn fruits, ripen. Bitterness is not apparent in the beginning but is coming out stronger and stronger in the aftertaste. Nice big beer, superb for slow tasting.

Bottle at Hashigo Zake. Pours orange amber, thin off white head. Big malty toffee aroma with orangey hops.
Syrupy toffee malt forms a huge base for a orange peel hop flavour to build on. A drying bitterness on the finish rids the mouth of enough sweetness to make you come back for another sip.
Just a really yum, moreish Barley Wine.

Bottle from Hasegawa. Poured into a snifter. Pours a copper brown with little to no head. Big aromas of melon, fig, and grain with a hint of booze noticeable as well. Light-medium body with an oily texture and average carbonation to lively carbonation. Tastes sweet at first with the stone fruit and fig standing out then the bitterness comes out and lingers on the palate. The 11% booze stands out a little too much for me, but still a solid barley wine.

Enjoyable barley wine. Good viscous mouth feel and a nice malty backbone. Lacks that something special.

Man I’m a sucker for barley wine. Bottle. Very long lasting tan head with awesome lacing, toffee brown body. Sweet aroma of dark fruits, malt, some leather as well, a bit of hop candy apple. Taste is fig and raisin, dark fruits, very sweet but nice hop balance as well. Palate is quite filling with very fine carbonation on the tounge. Any time baby.
