4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Cask at Tokyo Real Ale Festival 2008. Citric and crisp with some outstanding subtleties! Peaches, horseblanket, grainy malts, some dark-sugar and molasses. Strong and full-bodied but doesn’t taste like the 9% claimed. Hazy-amber. I should note that I am told that this is much better on cash than on regular draft, but this one was the festival winner for me.

Man I’m a sucker for barley wine. Bottle. Very long lasting tan head with awesome lacing, toffee brown body. Sweet aroma of dark fruits, malt, some leather as well, a bit of hop candy apple. Taste is fig and raisin, dark fruits, very sweet but nice hop balance as well. Palate is quite filling with very fine carbonation on the tounge. Any time baby.

2008 version, on draught at Nakameguro a year later. Aroma of fruit, something funky, honey. Sweet, fruity, vinous flavor with honey and hops. Good bitter hop finish. Nicely done. Has aged very well.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draught at Baird Naka-Meguro Taproom. Cloudy nut brown, small head. Caramelly and fruity, mature with estery alcohol - that’s how it introduces itself. Fairly sweet with solid caramelly body. Salty and grapefruity with depth in the caramely malt and lasting bitterness. Competent and charming.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle at Hashigo Zake. Pours orange amber, thin off white head. Big malty toffee aroma with orangey hops.
Syrupy toffee malt forms a huge base for a orange peel hop flavour to build on. A drying bitterness on the finish rids the mouth of enough sweetness to make you come back for another sip.
Just a really yum, moreish Barley Wine.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
12 oz. bottle, 2006 Vintage, picked up in Japan and shared by hogfodder on 3/20/08. Pour is hazed cheddar orange fluffy white head. Aroma of lemony citrusy pine hop. Floral bouquet as well. Taste is softly citrusy with a nice malt backbone. Lots of sweet fruit from the middle through the finish. Hugely impressed by Baird. Really nice, thanks for sharing this one Rick.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Draft at Baird Nakameguro Taproom. Pours copper, somewhat hazy, nice foamy top, reduces soon. Aroma is sweetish, honey, fruit marmalade. taste is full, warming, surprisingly fragrant for such a big beer. Autumn fruits, ripen. Bitterness is not apparent in the beginning but is coming out stronger and stronger in the aftertaste. Nice big beer, superb for slow tasting.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
A good sharp kick in the bollocks of a brew. 2009 real ale version. A heady nose of apricot and sweet fruits. Big ,burly taste on the palate and a nice warming finish. Well surprised by the quality of this one even though barley wines tend not to be my favourite.
