Kurofune (means "Black Ships") was the word the Japanese used to describe the American gunboats that came to open Japan to western trade. Kurofone Porter is sleek and forceful, but leaves a winning bittersweet taste of chocolate and coffee on the tongue. "Do not resist the superior might; cunningly acquiesce, and embrace." Kampai!

Poured a dark brown to black with a thin tan head and unexpectedly lively carbonation. Smells great, with dark fruits and chocolate dominating the nose. The taste is very balanced, with coffee and stewed fruit giving way to some milk chocolate at the back end. Light to medium bodied, but with a very smooth, almost creamy mouthfeel. Overall, a very more-ish lighter style porter.

Bottle shared with northropfrye. A nice beer. Dark chocolate and coffee, dried fruit. Bitter taste, but with some sweetness. I enjoyed this beverage.

Pours a dark black with a red tinge and has a brown ring around the glass. Has a sweet rich malt Aroma consisting of cocoa, black licorice, sweet dark fruit esthers, molasses & nuts. Taste is sweet roasted malts consisting of dri d fruits, molasses & dark chocolate up front with a coffee and roast malt bitterness on the finish. Very well balanced beer that’s big in body and has a very smooth booziness. Excellent Baltic porter.

Bottle @ Sugarloaf ME. This is a well crafted porter with lots of roasted malts and layers of aroma and bittering hops. If there was a rating dimension for perceived value for money this beer would tank as its a pricy import without a unique selling point - other than "I wonder what porters taste like in Japan?". I would grab a stone smoked porter or a Fullers and save some money.

Pours a nice black colour with a small tan ring around the Glass. Aromas of roasted malt, chocolate, and coffee. Flavors consist of coffee, dark/roasted malts, chocolate, light bitterness and a dry finish. Not a ton of flavors but they’re so well balanced.

The aroma that hits my nose is that lovely filling of Nuernberger Lebkuchen - praticularly the Elisen type, whichever fruit that marmalade is made of. Dark walnut brown with a nice off-white head that breaks away into larger bubbles leaving a flat skeleton. Flavours of classical porters, with chocolates, coffee and roasted malts. Coffee a bit too much. That fruity tone - the Lebkuchen filling - is still there. Bitter finish on a medium-bodied beer. Hard to beat it.
