Kurofune (means "Black Ships") was the word the Japanese used to describe the American gunboats that came to open Japan to western trade. Kurofone Porter is sleek and forceful, but leaves a winning bittersweet taste of chocolate and coffee on the tongue. "Do not resist the superior might; cunningly acquiesce, and embrace." Kampai!

Deep brown brew with a heavy red hue, big ass bubbly brown head that leaves my glass filthy. Coffee and berry sweetness on the nose first, that dirty filter / cigarette aroma - yea, down to style but I really am not a fan period. Slightly nutty with the smell of a variety bag of mixed and dried fruits. Chocolate and vanilla as well. The taste is alright - coffee, vanilla, nut, cream, light hop and citrus, hard roast - really can’t complain about this brew all that much as this is quite balanced and well put together. Fairly smooth with light, biting carbonation, mild to medium hop bit for the style and it is kept under control. Long stiff roast finish with hop hints. Well put together despite not being a beer that I really enjoy based on style.. aaaag..

Tallahassee, Fl - Beer Stop - bottle split with Aurelius, Dark, ruby red pour, off white head, light lace. Prunes, molasses and chocolate in the aroma. Molasses, light chocolate some date like fruitiness in the flavor. Back end roasty notes. Thick enough mouthfeel. Not bad.

This was poured into a pint glass. The appearance was a nice dark brown close to black color with a thick foamy yet bubbly looking off white to white head dissipated within about less than thirty seconds. . Light lacing pervaded throughout. The smell had a really nice sweet nutty roasty coffee to caramel to toffee to chocolate goodness. The taste replicates the same as the smell. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a pretty good sessionability about it. The carbonation was good for the style as it just enough to be sharp but not overbearing at any resort. It leaves a nice creamy and smooth trickling sweetness rolling over my tongue. Overall, hot damn, what a really nice porter I’d quickly have again.

Visual: Extremely cool Japanese-style artwork on the label. Pours ultra-dark brown with a nice-sized cream-foamy head, good retention, sticky lacing, several micro bubbly streams near the base of the glass. Nose: sweet roast coffee-chocolate malts, very enticing (lvl-8)-pungency Attack: silky smooth-crisp, mild fizzy Mid-palate: creamy-smooth mouthfeel, (MAIN) chocolate malts, roasted coffee, mild soy sauce Finish: just a touch of coffee sourness, soft bitter malted hops + roasted bitterness, hint of black pepper spiced malty finish. Summary: Ultra smooth, crisp and well-balanced, this one is now one of my favourite porters. This makes me reconsider my love for imperial stouts.
