Kurofune (means "Black Ships") was the word the Japanese used to describe the American gunboats that came to open Japan to western trade. Kurofone Porter is sleek and forceful, but leaves a winning bittersweet taste of chocolate and coffee on the tongue. "Do not resist the superior might; cunningly acquiesce, and embrace." Kampai!

UPDATED: SEP 24, 2015 360ml bottle (BierKompass.de)
6 Pleasant portery aroma, a bit of coffee, but a bit of pulses too.
4 Very dark red, large tight tan head, fairly persistent.
7 Solid roasty taste, pleasant sharp burnt edges, some dry barky hoppiness too, in particular in the retronasals ig you linger over swallowing. Some painty pencil sharpenings too.
4 Full and smooth in the palate, pleasant carbonation crispens it up nicely. Finish has most of the best parts of the taste, and few of the weaker parts. The dryness is palpable, this is very well attenuated.
14 Yet another corker from Baird - this is such an easy beer to drink despite the aspects they are quite happy to describe as "acrid", but for a lover of bitterness, and dryness, I think don’t deserve quite that term. No idea where they hid the 6%. In my belly, that’s where - all gone...
Rerate: Keg (Pudel, Tallinn) (7:4:7:3:13=3.5)
Honey and dark grains aroma. Very dry hoppy bitterness, and nice malts in the mough. Fizzier palate - keggier. Still very good, but with its strengths in different places.

Dark brown, very cream head, nice looks. Refined roasty and coffee aroma, herbal hop. Quite smoothed out, pleasant. Taste is nice but I do feel it’s a bit heavy on the stomach. (33cl bottle from Saveur Bière)

Bottle @ Party Source / Bellevue KY --- bottled 12/19/14 --- Aroma of malt and coffee. Opaque black-brown color (like Coke), off-white head that drops to a cover, stripes of lace. Taste is malt that adds coffee and light chocolate as it moves through light carbonation to a finish that turns chalky and bitter. Starts well, and ends less well. Maybe past the "best by" date. Not a re-do here.

Jultsu (753) - TAMPERE, FINLAND - SEP 1, 2016
Package date 05 10 15. Musta väri, iso tuuhea viipyvä vaahto. Katkeran kuiva puuroinen (ruis, kaura, ohra??) tuoksu, , suutuntuma hapan, samettinen, savujuustoisa, mieto. Lämpöisenä jo pikkaisen runkoakin tulee esiin, mutta hivenen liian jännä ja mitäänsanomaton porteriksi.

Blueshawk (406) - Bad Bellingen, GERMANY - AUG 28, 2016

Tap at Craft Beer Base Bud in Osaka, JP. Murky brown pour with good foam and lace. Nose is muted, low coconut. Flavor of dusty cocoa powder, fairly dry, sharp roasted malt, fairly robust. Clean, neutral end. Simple, no major flaws.
