COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Kurofune (means "Black Ships") was the word the Japanese used to describe the American gunboats that came to open Japan to western trade. Kurofone Porter is sleek and forceful, but leaves a winning bittersweet taste of chocolate and coffee on the tongue. "Do not resist the superior might; cunningly acquiesce, and embrace." Kampai!

6 Pleasant portery aroma, a bit of coffee, but a bit of pulses too.
4 Very dark red, large tight tan head, fairly persistent.
7 Solid roasty taste, pleasant sharp burnt edges, some dry barky hoppiness too, in particular in the retronasals ig you linger over swallowing. Some painty pencil sharpenings too.
4 Full and smooth in the palate, pleasant carbonation crispens it up nicely. Finish has most of the best parts of the taste, and few of the weaker parts. The dryness is palpable, this is very well attenuated.
14 Yet another corker from Baird - this is such an easy beer to drink despite the aspects they are quite happy to describe as "acrid", but for a lover of bitterness, and dryness, I think don’t deserve quite that term. No idea where they hid the 6%. In my belly, that’s where - all gone...

This was poured into a pint glass. The appearance was a nice dark brown close to black color with a thick foamy yet bubbly looking off white to white head dissipated within about less than thirty seconds. . Light lacing pervaded throughout. The smell had a really nice sweet nutty roasty coffee to caramel to toffee to chocolate goodness. The taste replicates the same as the smell. On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a pretty good sessionability about it. The carbonation was good for the style as it just enough to be sharp but not overbearing at any resort. It leaves a nice creamy and smooth trickling sweetness rolling over my tongue. Overall, hot damn, what a really nice porter I’d quickly have again.

Very dark brown, beige head. Biscuit and cocoa malt, bittersweet chocolate, some licorice, nutty notes, a little leathery age.

Visual: Extremely cool Japanese-style artwork on the label. Pours ultra-dark brown with a nice-sized cream-foamy head, good retention, sticky lacing, several micro bubbly streams near the base of the glass. Nose: sweet roast coffee-chocolate malts, very enticing (lvl-8)-pungency Attack: silky smooth-crisp, mild fizzy Mid-palate: creamy-smooth mouthfeel, (MAIN) chocolate malts, roasted coffee, mild soy sauce Finish: just a touch of coffee sourness, soft bitter malted hops + roasted bitterness, hint of black pepper spiced malty finish. Summary: Ultra smooth, crisp and well-balanced, this one is now one of my favourite porters. This makes me reconsider my love for imperial stouts.

Dark reddish brown, moderate to large head, good lace/retention. Aroma is chocolate, light roast, some caramel, a touch of hop bitterness. Lighter bodied, pretty nice porter.

12oz bottle, on closeout at Party Source. Brown red color. Thin khaki bubbly head. Good dots and spread of lace. Medium to bigger body. Lighter, smooth carbonation. Lightly slick. Good roasty aroma, dark chocolate, nice coffee. Bitter sweet taste. Drinking good right now, impressive for the age it probably has. Nice chewier texture, more bitter taste, and good big long lasting finish to the aroma. Just a hint of dark fruit, very light sweet caramel malt.

Bottle to snifter (shared by DrSilverworm). Looks good for the style; a semi-translucent dark mahogany with bubbly off-white lacing. Smells of dark malt and roast. Tastes like it smells with some chocolate as well. Decent on the palate. Thin, but alright.

360ml bottle imported March 2012. Poured with a creamy tan head that had very good retention and lacing. Very dark brown but clear body. Aroma: lightly sweet, with hints of chocolate, raisins and coffee. Flavor: rich and complex with great balance and a lasting dark-roasted grain aftertaste. Somewhat similar to a Scottish stout including a hint of smoke. Feel: Medium body is near creamy smooth even with lively medium carbonation. O: excellent.

Bottle at The Foundry (Mohamed Sultan Rd), Singapore
The color is dark brown, cloudy, with generous beige head. The aroma is chocolatey (like a chocolate bar for cooking). Lean and dry mouthfeel; the roasted malt and chocolate flavor are in balance, although there is as usual a light yeast and dust touch in the end; correct bitterness.
More a Brown Ale, quite good though.
