Kurofune (means "Black Ships") was the word the Japanese used to describe the American gunboats that came to open Japan to western trade. Kurofone Porter is sleek and forceful, but leaves a winning bittersweet taste of chocolate and coffee on the tongue. "Do not resist the superior might; cunningly acquiesce, and embrace." Kampai!

6 Pleasant portery aroma, a bit of coffee, but a bit of pulses too.
4 Very dark red, large tight tan head, fairly persistent.
7 Solid roasty taste, pleasant sharp burnt edges, some dry barky hoppiness too, in particular in the retronasals ig you linger over swallowing. Some painty pencil sharpenings too.
4 Full and smooth in the palate, pleasant carbonation crispens it up nicely. Finish has most of the best parts of the taste, and few of the weaker parts. The dryness is palpable, this is very well attenuated.
14 Yet another corker from Baird - this is such an easy beer to drink despite the aspects they are quite happy to describe as "acrid", but for a lover of bitterness, and dryness, I think don’t deserve quite that term. No idea where they hid the 6%. In my belly, that’s where - all gone...

Honey and dark grains aroma. Very dry hoppy bitterness, and nice malts in the mough. Fizzier palate - keggier. Still very good, but with its strengths in different places.

Looks pretty black, pours with a 2 inch head, settles to 1/2" and holds. Tan head. weak lace. Creamy, sugary, raosted malt flavor. Does this beer have adjunct sugar? Shame, shame!

In bottiglia. Colore marrone scuro, schiuma beige fine e persistente.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Tom L’s place. Thanks zvsn. Deep brown with medium brownish head. Nice creamy aroma with notes of vanilla, milk chocolate and some butter. Sweetish flavor, light hoppy bitterness, notes of vanilla and milk chocolate, watery and dry. Soft carbonation, light to medium-bodied.
