COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Export stouts generally are rich and roasty in flavor, moderately high in alcoholic strength, and sporting some noticeable hop character (normally registering in terms of bitterness and flavor). Baird Midnight Oil Export Stout enjoys a complexly layered roasted malt character (in addition to roasted barely we add three roasted malts to the grist -- chocolate, chocolate wheat and black) and a firm, straightforward hop flavor (bittering and flavor additions of Nugget and Fuggle, respectively). The color is midnight oil black, the mouthfeel is oily and unctuous. This stout will pick up your spirits amidst this dreary end to winter in Japan. In addition to the draught version, bottles (633 ml) also are available for purchase.

On a day when the former Oils’ frontman performed the exceedingly rare double Gonski... Bottle, 13C. Black with a tan head that settles to an inch. Aroma is gently but deeply roasty with coffee, chocolate and cherries, some licorice, grapefruit and pepper. Oily, low carbonation. Sweeter and more straightforward than suggested by the aroma, with caramel and mocha. Bitterness is quite firm and the beer dries out a bit towards the end. Just a touch of licorice, hints of citrus. After the sweetness the finish is pleasantly clean.

Tap at Nakameguro taproom. My favourite of the three stouts I had that night. Dark brown, big bubbly thick golden head. Aroma is oaty, bit of roast, touch of chocolate maybe. Littke bit of citrus. Taste is quite nice. Mellow and slightly creamy, roast again as expected, slight hop bitterness, touch of vanilla, bit of citrus fruitiness in there but well hidden. Finish is big and dark, thick and roasty.

On tao in Bashimachi Tap Room. Colour is oily back, with a rainbow bubbly head. Nose is really nice sweet chocolate, roasted malt and some earthiness. Taste is dark chocolate, strong alcoholic kick like an imperial stout, earthy roasted malt and some coffee on the finish. Dry and sweet and very nice.

22/07/2011 Brasserie 4:20 (bottle).

UPDATED: MAY 26, 2012 Draught at the Nakameguro Taproom. Black with small bubbily head, giving away the thin mouth feel to come. Smell was roasted coffee mixed with the vinous baird hops and some chocolate as well. Dark chocolate and coffee cream taste, some hop presence as well. I was in my cups at this point but really liked this one. Re-rate from 2010 bottle found in Australia. Palate is a bit thin still but nice and creamy, head is wonderfully pillowy and tan. Had to up the score - Baird is on a world scale, amazing brews!
