Baird Natsumikan Summer Ale is an extraordinarily unique beer that was an immense challenge to brew. Wheat and barley combine in equal proportions as the base malt; Japanese candy sugar contributes five percent of the fermentables; and freshly peeled and crushed natsumikans (Japanese summer mikans) from both Shizuoka and Fukuoka are added to the kettle at the end of wort boiling (approximately 33 kg of natsumikans per 225 liters wort). The natsumikans from Shizuoka (the Heda garden of our carpenter friend, Nagakura-san) are quite large, grapefruit-like mikans with a distinct grapefruit-like tart and sour character. The Fukuoka mikans (from the Kita-Kyushu orchard of beer enthusiast and friend, Tago-san), on the other hand, are smaller, sweeter and more orange-like in character. Aprroximately 75% of the natsumikans we used come from Shizuoka and 25% from Fukuoka

Also known as Shizuoka Summer Mikan.

Bottle courtesy of sebletitje. Pours a hazy caramel color with thin foamy whote head. Aroma is sweet and floral with notes of caramel, honey, spice, lemon, citrus, and hints of ripe fresh fruit. Flavor is sweet and malty with notes of lemon, citrus, spice, flowers, some fresh fruit. Light to medium body with a tangy finish.

Bottle from brewer, 2008 I think. Pale amber body, little head but good lacing. The rosy baird hop scent is dressed up with some sugar cookie, slight lemon, and summer mikan. Taste is quite dry, a bit weak all in all, the mikan lurks behind and adds a citrusy quality. Some spice comes out in the form of ginger cookie. Interesting, but the 660mil bottle was a bit much for one man. Dry palate with a quick finish. A nice beer to bring to a tasting and split, but wouldnt keep a big supply in the fridge.

Bottle… mgumby10’s & hopscotch’s WtFFfFDotF Throwdown … Cloudy golden ale with a mid-sized, creamy, white head. Decent retention. The fruity aroma offers notes of ripe apricot and peach alongside crisp pale grains. Medium-bodied with lively carbonation. Decently balanced. Fruity and tangy – apricot and peach - plus pale malt sweetness. Lengthy, fruity finish that eventually dries out. Bottle provided by mgumby10!

Thanks sebletitje for the share. Pours hazy orange gold with a white head. Nose is orange, malt, spice, citrus fruit, sugary light fruit, and star fruit. Flavor is a lot of sweetness and light fruit that is beginning to make me think that there is a basic Japanese fruit for beers like these. Light bodied and very sessionable, enjoyable beer.

This is the Shizuoka Natsumikan Ale as per the label with 6% abv. Pours a cloudy golden with nice white head. Aroma of citrus/orange peel, yeast with light bitterness nose. Lots of freshness come out of the aroma. Taste, lots of sweet citrus flavors, with some other fruits juice that I can’t really pinpoint and must be the Japanese fruit mentioned. Some spices, light bitterness. This is one tasty beer. Very impressed by this newly available brewery.

Pours a glowing bright orange color, with a small off white head. Smells of big citrus, I got a lot of praches and apricots in there. i suppose natsurnikans as well, whatever they are. The flavor is also pretty fruity, mixed with some nice sweet malt and sugars. Big peach flavors come through for me. Very refreshing and interesting little fruit beer. Makes me want to try a Japanese natsurnikan and see what it tastes like. Cool beer to try.
