COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Like a fearsome storm cloud, Rainy Season Black Ale will unleash a torrential downpour of hoppiness (80 IBUs of American Simcoe, Centennial and Amarillo) on your unsuspecting palate. A symphony orchestra of hop smells play on the nose; a huge amalgam of fruity and spicy hop flavors reign in the mouth; a sticky, resinous cascade of hop bitterness follows in what seems like a never-ending finish (and who would possibly want to bring this fun to an end?). Underlying it all rests 17 degrees plato of muscular malt flavor (Maris Otter, Wheat, Caramel Wheat, Caramel, Chocolate and Roast Barley). A burnt, molasses-like character stems from ample additions of Japanese black sugar. The rainy season never tasted so good!

Tap at Good Beer Faucets. Dark brown, very dark red colour with golden head. Aroma is cream, chocolate, roast malt, bit of smokiness, pine and citrus hops. Taste has some dark fruits, lots of malt, ovaltine-like almost. Touch of spice in there too giving it a bit of a prickle. At the same time, some chocolatey sweetness. Maybe something herbal in there too. Finish is toasty with subtle bitterness. Very smooth and medium bodied. Very nice.

Bottle, 12C. Black with a large beige head. Smells very fruity with stone and citrus fruits, some chocolate, pine and slight burnt notes. Oily mouthfeel. Not all that sweet. Astringent roasted and coffee notes straight away, but peaches and a little citrus are there too. A bit of dark toffee and pine are underneath. Bitterness is there but not as pronounced as I’d guess - there’s nearly as much astringency at the end as bitterness. Tasty and well-balanced.

Bottle from Mane Liquor. Nice dark brown pour with a very fluffy, off white head. Roasted malts and a little ash on the nose followed by a touch of pine and chocolate. Cocoa powder and roasted malts mingle throughout. Finish with pine and more of the roasted bitter notes. Quite flavoursome and very easy drinking. Good beer

Bordering on jet black with a billowy tan head. Little yeastie chunks floating around. Aromas of roasted malts, chocolate, coffee and burned caramel, with a fair resinous hop whack in there too. Flavour is dominated by the roasted malts, hops + hop bitterness are there but tend to pop the astringency out of the malt. Mouthfeel is thick and rich. Big beer, just slightly to roasty and bitter for its own good.

Pours dark deep red brown with tan head. Nice hoppy aroma, citrus and peach with a light roast malt. Hops show up front in the flavour, citric bitterness followed with a dry cocoa roastyness. Finish is bitter, slight chocolate. Aggressive, roasty and hoppy. Almost like a black American brown ale.

Pours a dark brown color with a tan head. Aroma is of light hops, some chocolate malts, and caramel. Hops come out a little more on the flavor but not as much as I was expecting them to. Some chocolate and molasses come out on the flavor as well. Slight bitter finish.

Pours a deep brown color with a ruby tint and a light brown head. Aroma is malty, caramel, roast, some chocolate, and very intense piny citrus hops. Flavor is roast, caramel, toast, and a very flavorful piny citrus hop finish. Really good dark hoppy beer.

Another disappointing seasonal from Baird. Looked the business, very dark. Minimal malt/hop nose. A lot less hops than I was expecting. Very nuetral in this aspect for a supposed 80 IBUs. Quite malty, perhaps more balanced than expected for the style.
