This original amber ale is inspired by the "Steam" style of beer. Whereas a "Steam" is a lager beer fermented at an elevated ale-type temperature, Red Rose is an ale fermented at a lower lager-type temperature. Like a "Steam," Red Rose combines a crisp lager refreshingness with a robust ale fruitiness. A lovely citrus-pine hop character is present from start to finish.

Bottle from Uba ja Humal in Tallinn. Package date ca 7 months ago. Hazy coppery amber colour. The head’s big, creamy white, retains and laces nicely. On the nose it’s kinda strangely reminiscent of leavened (soured) cabbage - the aroma is rather faint unfortunately, but has this pretty interesting mix of sweet and sour. Not saying I’m enjoying it or looking for this in my beer, but at least it’s interesting. The distinct fruity Steam beer aroma is there as well, more so as it warms. Tastes of modest fruitiness and rather harsh, even unbalanced bitterness. Finishes rough... metallic, grapefruit peel bitter, yet somehow lagery... Mediumish body, rather active carbonation. I’ve had a couple of excellent California Commons - this upside-down version does not beat them. Curiously, it kinda reminds me of some Bitters. Which I’m not a fan of. Extra point for inventiveness.
