Bottle from Tanakaya. Yep, itís a stout all right. Not oatmeal sweet. Not dry like Guinness. Very nicely done. Unlike a Yebisu "Stout", Bairdís really IS a stout. Quite bitter in the finish.

Sampled @ GJBF Yokohama: Dark black, nose of rich clove and licorice and roast, some coffee and chocolate. The flavor is chewy, some spruce and hop. The finish is clean, nice stout.

UPDATED: JUL 7, 2007 on tap at Popeyes Tokyo. $8/pint. Thick 2 finger creamy nitrogen head that never dies. Perfect head. I love NO2. Pitch black color. No overroasted grain flavor, which is nice, Not much smell, but a good beer.7,4,7,5,16 (draft) Rerate from Trafalgar: 6,3,7,3,14 (bottle) merged two ratings

[on tap at Popeye] Vanilla and bubblegummy roasted barley aroma. Almost opaque, dark brown under a nitrogen foam cover. Nice oaky vanilly roast flavour with hazlenut and caramel accents. Also a little coffee and toastiness. Bitterness comes mostly from dark malts. Medium to full body with low carbonation and a not unpleasant, lingering malt bitterness.

Poures deep brown with red highlights. Has a creamy, light tan head. Aroma is light. Notes of malts and roasted coffee beans. Flavor is semi-sweet with a bit of bitterness. Coffee, chocolate and roasted malts are blended rather well making this a pretty tasty brew. It would be nice if the flavor was a little stronger and had a fuller body, but itís a pretty good stout. Iíll pick this one up again.

If youíre a Guinness fan, this might not be the beer for you. Had on tap in at Cheers Yokohama in Japan; Served at the perfect tempurature. Good coffee-like aromas, but not nearly as thick or smooth in the mouth as Guinness. It resembled more of a porter to me than a stout, but thatís exactly what I like. I will drink this beer every opportunity that I get!

RBSG 2005. Head is mostly diminishing. Body is dark brown. Aroma is moderately malty (roasted grain, chocolate), lightly yeasty (barnyard), with a note of wood. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, moderately bitter. Light to medium body, watery texture, soft carbonation. Interesting aroma with...wild yeast? Nah, couldnít be. A bit thin, but a nice balance. I must admit I rather liked this.

Pours light brown, medium tan top. Woody, slightly smoky aroma that is supported loosely by malt base. Smoked malt, refreshing palate, and woody character with neat bitter to it. Not bad.
