Bottle. Didn’t realize how rare this was before opening, so sorry for not sharing it. Tight, tan head. When you smell it, you’d swear it was a West Coast hoppy amber or IPA. Plenty of C hops and a hint of black patent malts. Flavor of orange and tangerine to go along with the burnt coffee and wet forest timber. The beer has a really natural taste to it, fresh. Like lime gummyworms. I’d love to try this on a nitro pour.

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
One of the new Japanese craft brews, a smoked stout with thick and creamy, light beige head and opaque black robe. Aroma of smoked herring, bitter chocolate, mocha ice cream, wet leather, bacon, charcoal, bayleaf, cold coffee, some vanilla, salmiac, cappuccino, toasted bread, candied figs, dried thyme, some vanilla, hints of soy sauce and wood glue. Taste of candied fruits without the typical sweetness; soft carbo, smooth and lean, perhaps somewhat thin body; very malty all the way through, caramelly and nutty tones, roasted bitterness (coffee!) in the end but in a very courtious, elegant kind of way, not biting or overpowering at all; somewhat metallic as well; smoky accent, clearly present in the nose, returns in an equally soft and gentle way retronasally. Vague spiciness of bayleaf and nutmeg adds some complexity, salmiac is there but also in a gentle, subdued way; finishes a bit smokey, gently hoppy and bitter, no alcohol is perceivable. Considering this country has no ’real’ beer tradition and is establishing its own identity in the craft beer world nowadays, this is far from bad; it is completely correctly brewed, no flaws or off-flavours here, but the aroma promises a bit more than the taste can deliver. Could do with a bit more personality. Still okay though, enjoyed it.

3.4 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 1/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 1/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle from Tanakaya. Yep, it’s a stout all right. Not oatmeal sweet. Not dry like Guinness. Very nicely done. Unlike a Yebisu "Stout", Baird’s really IS a stout. Quite bitter in the finish.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
360ml brown bottle. Pours deep dark brown with mahogany highlights. Great head - quite thick, creamy, longlasting, beige in colour. Nose has dark chocolate and a decent level of roasted malt. Very light hop note. Roasty malt in the mouth, some coffee and chocolate. Decent roasted malt bitterness and light hops in the aftertaste. Medium bodied, fine carbonation. Dry stouts do not often excite me, but this is quite enjoyable, would have no problem sessioning this.

[on tap at Popeye]
Vanilla and bubblegummy roasted barley aroma. Almost opaque, dark brown under a nitrogen foam cover. Nice oaky vanilly roast flavour with hazlenut and caramel accents. Also a little coffee and toastiness. Bitterness comes mostly from dark malts. Medium to full body with low carbonation and a not unpleasant, lingering malt bitterness.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle (gift from Neko-chan). Smooth chocolate roastiness with some coffee notes. Dark brown with a 1-cm light beige head. Creamy mild chocolate flavor. Pretty consistent from initial to finish, without much development in flavors. Thin-medium body. Had this years ago, and it wasn’t nearly this good. A very pleasant mild stout.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Keg at the Harajuku taproom. Dark brown with small golden head. Aroma is soy sauce, roasty, bit of coffee, touch of smoke (and bacon). Taste is slightly creamy but mostly roasty bitterness. More of the savoury meat and soy sauce thing. Long lasting roasty finish. Bit of sweet malt hidden in there too. Nice and sessionable.
