The first key to a great Double IPA is dryness of character despite the high original gravity. This is accomplished, foremost, through high attenuation by the yeast during fermentation. We aim for an apparent attenuation around 85% which yields relative dryness and alcohol strength. The second key is a fantastic and powerful hop aroma. This we achieve by dry hopping Suruga Bay Imperial IPA with several varieties of pungently strong American hops. We conduct this dry hopping not once but twice, in two separate tanks. Then, at packaging, to ensue a vigorous secondary fermentation and natural carbonation, we krauesen Suruga Bay with a percentage of peak fermentation beer from a different batch. Suruga Bay Imperial IPA is a wickedly compelling flavor experience. Its hop character is as rich as Japanís Suruga Bay is deep (it is Japanís deepest bay and Baird Brewing is located on its inner shore). The greatness of Suruga Bay Imperial IPA resides in a supreme drinkability that pervades in spite of the potency.

Thanks Presario. 360 ml., yellow with one quarter inch white foamy head, lace rings. Pungent hop aromas. A bit of a tongue number, shredder, big IBU. Decently drinkable, a bit of sourness in finish.Worth trying. I liked it.

Glowing brown beer with limited cap, nice lacing though. Aroma is good, tangerine, flowery alcohol, mild wood. Taste isnít as strong as aroma but still ok. Bitter, wood, pine, and citrus. The malts are fairly thin and unbalanced. Good beer I would drink again, but Iíll probably forget about it in a week or two.

In short: A very yeasty and very hoppy (grapefruits, pine-tree) IPA. A very nice but not refreshing hop fix
How: Bottle 360ml, yes, 360ml!!!. Nice chubby bottle. Consumed as fresh as possible (itís from Japan) the day after I received it from presario. Thanks a bunch my friend.
The look: Cloudy peach-orange body topped by a small white head leaving good lacings
In long: Nose is surprisingly bright and very hoppy with dominant notes of pine-tree and grapefruits. Smells like a fresh American IPA even if it comes from the other side of the planet. Taste is crusty bread, lots of yeast, some caramel, grapefruits, candied oranges, pine-tree needles, residual sugars, forest floor, spicy sensation. Alcohol is a apparent despite the not-so-high 7.5%. The body is fluffy. Bitterness is sharp and biting. This is one of those far-from-clean-and-crisp IPA. Feels more yeasty than malty. Not very refreshing but it is tasty and satisfying for what it is. Another good IPA from a Japanese brewery, something that was rather rare only 4 or 5 years ago. It is unbelievable how productive this small country is. And just imagine just how much more productive they would be if they started to use forks and spoons.

Bottle. Thanks to Vertical bacon strips for the trade!! Pours orange with not much head. Aromas of full citrus hops and not much else. Taste is full of citrus and some lingering grapefruit. Not much else. Proper carbonation, good body. Not enough bitterness but who knows how old this bottle is.

Clear orangey golden body with decent head. Lovely hop aroma, citrus fruits mainly to me. Taste is the same as the aroma with assertive bitterness coming through, medium to full body and well balanced. Started off fairly well but just dropped off a little towards the end.

Draft at the Baird Tasting Room in Nakameguro, in the glass there is a slight haze to the bright amber. Tons of stewed fruit and caramel on the nose. Big mouthfeel, rich and just a little salty. Some biscuityness from the malt comes through, along with berries and melons. Highly rated...and highly tasty.

The smell is of some kind of fruit and not too hoppy, which is shocking when you consider that it says IIPA on the bottle... Pours hazy with not much head. Flavour is & subtle, the hops come on later in the palate, itís very balanced. The hops flavour does stay on for a while once it starts. This one is very even tasting, but closer to just an IPA rather than and IIPA.

Pretty reasonable - but not outstanding. Mixture of herbal and citrus on the nose. Creamy mouthfeel with bitter citrus. A little sweet in the mid palate, just lacking overall balance from start to finish but nice enough - while watching Californication...!

Not the best IIPA I have had, but not unenjoyable. Aroma is hops with huge citrus spice, yeast and hops all over. The taste is overly sweet hops with citrus yeast spices. Okay....
