COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Yuzu is the Japanese name for a citron (a slightly less acidic lemon-lime type fruit). It is a wonderfully aromatic fruit with a snappy zest that is much prized in Japan. We received our portion from the Temple grounds of the family of one of Baird Beers' closest friends. We proceeded to shave off and collect the outer peels and hand-squeeze the juice. We then added both the peels and the juice to a rich, malted-wheat accented wort at the end of kettle boil. The end result is, in a word, divine! Hazy golden-orange in color, Temple Garden Yuzu Ale sports a cloud-like creamy white head that immediately conjures images of a higher being. The brisk citric aroma of Yuzu quickly invades the olfactory senses. The mouthfeel is softy coating and fruity-sweet but a playful carbonation and citric acidity keep the palate in an alert state of attention. Finally, a kiss of malt roundness and honeyed sweetness send the Yuzu fruit flavor into paroxysms of Nirvana-like joy. Temple Garden Yuzu Ale surely is a beery sign that, in the apocryphal words of Benjamin Franklin, "God loves us and wants us to be happy."

633ml bottle pours a hazy golden orange color with a 2 finger off-white head that settles to some thin spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma is fruity with citrus and mild caramel and floral and herbal notes. Taste is citrusy hop bitterness balanced nicely with a fruity and caramel malt sweetness with some spice possibly ginger. Medium bodied with some nice carbonation leaving a pleasing sensation on the palate. A nicely done fruit beer.

Bottle at home, which I assume must have come from BrewDog Aberdeen. It pours golden orange/yellow, with a thick white head. The nose is sweet fruit - apple, white grape, yuzu?, sweet orange, honey and spice. The taste is pine, resin, light fruit - apple, yuzu, citrus pith, straw and spice, with a dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Pretty good stuff all round.

From bottle. Pours golden with white head. STRANGE! Herbal aroma, sausages! Tastes of basil, massive basil flavor, some thyme, bit lemon. Initial bitterness, followed by balanced citrus and herb taste. Too weird!

Bottle shared by Butters at Butters Slutfest 2.0, Richmond, VA, 4.23.11. Pours clear but with chunky particles. Medium sized fizzy tan head. Decent head retention and lacing. Fruity aroma with notes of citrus and scuppernong, an herbal note reminiscent of sage and a slightly burnt note. Medium bodied. Nice beer.

22/07/2011 Brasserie 4:20 (bottle). Degustazione al Baird Beer Festival. Ambrata, abbastanza limpida, lieve schiuma biancastra morbida, poco persistente. Corpo medio, carbonazione corretta. Birra elegante, seducente, ben bilanciata. Da provare.

Bottle:   Orange caramel, hazy, moderate sudsy white head, spotty lacing.   Fruity noise, tropical and citrusy.   Also seems to have a caramel like flair.   This reminds me of a very old Barley Wine.   Weird, somewhat like 01 Old Horizontal in its sweetness.   Dry fruitiness on the tongue, a little powdery.   Tastes like star fruit a bit.   A little bit of wheatiness.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Tropical fruit like finish, a little dry and powdery.   Different.

Bottle at Butters’ Slutfest: Orange, pineapple, kiwi fruit, and marijuana aroma. Cloudy amber, sediment. Orange and lemon flavor, less dank than the aroma. Finishes herbal with thyme and sage. I think there’s weed in this one, which may explain the "nirvana-like joy" described on the label. :-) Dank, fruity, and herbal in a pleasant way.

Sampled at Slutfest 2.0. Again with the weird sage quality. Is this sorachi? white pepper, sweet fruit. herbal bittersweet finish. Dry finish. Again, another unique beer. And a great label.

Cloudy amber beer. Frothy tan head that dies away quickly. The head has a nice sherbet zing. The beer is full of flavour. Citrus and gingery spice. I guess this must be the Yuzu fruit! Refreshing and light. The finish is crisp and has a nutty flavour. An unusual tasting beer. Striking and immensely drinkable.
