COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The mikans used in this brew are fresh, succulent, and local -- harvested on the Heda land and by the hand of our carpenter friend, Nagakura-san. The Baird brewers hand-process the harvested mikans, shaving off the outer skin of the peel and pressing the juice. Both peel shavings and juice are added to the brew at different stages of production. The mikans serve to add depth and complexity to an already sumptious ale; their role is to complement, not dominate. In addition to mikans, the 2009 Carpenter’s Mikan Ale incorporates a grain bill including Maris Otter pale ale malt, wheat malt, unmalted wheat and two types of Japanese sugar (sudakito and akato). The hopping schedule features cirtrusy Centennial and Cascade varieties including dry-hop additions to the conditioning tank. The combination of mikans and citrus hops provide an exquisitely complex yet balanced fruit character. The wonderful aromatics of this character waft gorgeously from the billowy white head that forms in the glass. Final transport to beer Nirvana comes courtesy of the tight and spritzy natural carbonation that works to keep you tastebuds fresh and alert.

633ml bottle - $9.49 at Hop City in Atlanta, Georgia.

Appearance: Pours a clouded (from some suspended yeast mini-morsels), orange-copper body with a goodly sized, frothed, near white head.

Smell: Fresh, juicy, inviting nose of citrus fruits from the mikans as well as the c-hops floated by biscuit toned malts, a trace of yeastiness, and a hint of dry honey.

Taste: A biscuity malt base with a faint toastiness at the edges and some honeyed sweetness upfront. Citrusy, floral hops with ample bitterness throughout. There’s a very, very mild tartness to that mikan fruitiness. Has some hint of lemon, grapefruit, and mandarin orange. Superbly fruity finish, still faintly tart and a bit bitter.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium-plus carbonation.

Overall: Pleasant tasting, crisp, and very refreshing, though a lessened ABV% would certainly help in that department.

Pours deep chunky orange gold into a snifter. White head with medium retention recedes to skim surface. Grapefruit and orange aromas. Medium bodied with yeast, grapefruit and tangerine upfront turning to a lasting dry, pith finish.

Bomber shared by Marcus. Pours clear copper with a foamy beige head. Aroma of fruity hop and lgiht caramel. Near med body. Flavor is something related to citrus with flroal aspects and some roast malt. Kind of an ESB thing. Sort of.

Bottle. Head is initially large, frothy, off-white, fully lasting. Body is hazy light amber, bottle conditioned. Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain), lightly to moderately hoppy (grapefruit, apricot). Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, velvety/watery texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic. Ya know, I can’t really tell there’s any satsuma in this, and I loooooooove satsumas (easily my favorite type of orange). It just smells like citrusy-grapefruity hops. Pretty one-dimensional and dull in the nose, but this may not be the freshest sample...no oxidation notes though. Flavor balance is decent albeit a bit tart, which is to be expected with fruit additions. Forgettable, but looks fantastic.

Bottle shared by Butters at Butters Slutfest 2.0, Richmond, VA, 4.23.11. Pours a hazy dark strong color with chunky floating particles. Large creamy tan head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of syrupy citrus fruits, honey, floral notes and sawdust. The taste is tart syrupy fruits with a nutty finish. Medium bodied. Nice one.

651mL thanks to Travlr. The pour is a cloudy, glowing, bright orange laden with loads of yeast particulate micro globules. A small, yellow head forms with poor retention. The nose is pink lemonade- fresh and citric. Taste is tart and has some Hitachino like notes (similar yeast or water profile?) like cedar and muted white vinegar. Citrus peel bitterness comes through with resinous wood. Dry mouthfeel with orange juice tartness. Pink lemonade still comes to mind more than satsuma, the fruit this is made with.
