The mikans used in this brew are fresh, succulent, and local -- harvested on the Heda land and by the hand of our carpenter friend, Nagakura-san. The Baird brewers hand-process the harvested mikans, shaving off the outer skin of the peel and pressing the juice. Both peel shavings and juice are added to the brew at different stages of production. The mikans serve to add depth and complexity to an already sumptious ale; their role is to complement, not dominate. In addition to mikans, the 2009 Carpenter’s Mikan Ale incorporates a grain bill including Maris Otter pale ale malt, wheat malt, unmalted wheat and two types of Japanese sugar (sudakito and akato). The hopping schedule features cirtrusy Centennial and Cascade varieties including dry-hop additions to the conditioning tank. The combination of mikans and citrus hops provide an exquisitely complex yet balanced fruit character. The wonderful aromatics of this character waft gorgeously from the billowy white head that forms in the glass. Final transport to beer Nirvana comes courtesy of the tight and spritzy natural carbonation that works to keep you tastebuds fresh and alert.

(2nd Shenandoah Throwdown, 633ml bottle) Small off-white head, cloudy amber body with dead yeast aplenty. Aroma is medium sweet, orange. Taste is moderately sweet, orange, light earthy. Smooth light-medium body.

Appearance: finely hazed on amber look, light white top presented.3-
Nose: Citric, fresh hop character, light fruit touches.
Flavor/Palate : Soft medium bodied, amber malts with straight, clean citric hops. Softer at finish. Clean ale.

2009-06-05. Hazy golden orange body with a small white head. Aroma is spicy, ginger? sort of wasabi like? Mild hops. (6+) Flavour has a similar spice character to it that reminiscent of ginger/wasabi (is it really there or is it just in my head because the beer is from Japan?), light hoppy bitterness as well. Odd melange of flavours lingers in the aftertaste. (6+) Average palate feels lighter than it is due to a lack of carbonation. Decent, unusual and pleasant. Speckled peach. Frothy and clingy white head shows solid retention. Soapy, honey-drizzled orange pith aromas with background notes of sweet toasted malt, mikan zest, and honeydew melon. Soft, expansive carbonation. Bottle conditioned. Firmly mineralic, initially, though notably soft and flavorsome with hops which lend restrained orange pith and floral accents. Artfully extracted malt exudes lightly and cleanly, displaying flashes of crackers, honeyed bread, and some tongue-clutching toasted-hay grittiness. Cardboard oxidation provides astringency which bludgeons the array of soft delicacies. Virtually devoid of bitterness with the exception of a zestlike pinch which flees as quickly as it emerges. Finishes somewhat tackily with yeast and trace honeyed-malt sweetness, though curiously bare and hollow, with scant mikan remnants lingering. Bit of a letdown as it’s already oxidized (bottling date unknown) and lacks the sparkling estery pizzazz which characterizes many of Baird’s beers. Okay.

633ml Bottle: Aroma of hops, citrus, caramel, pale malts, slight oranges, mikan, and some toasting. Poured orange/amber in color with a medium-sized, creamy, rocky, off-white head that lasted throughout. Cloudy. Sparkling. Full of small, medium, and large-sized particles throughout. Flavor is medium sweet. Tastes of fruit, hops, citrus, mikan, grains, tangerine, sugar, toasting, caramel, and malts. Medium body. Chalky texture. Average carbonation. Fruity, hoppy, citrus and malt finish is chalky.

I didnt know this was a fruit beer.... Shared at SL by robert. Orange in color. Nice little head. Light orange notes aroma. Taste is orange-ish. Sweet malty taste. Light in texture. Easy to drink. Overall not a bad fruitbeer at all.

This was a lot better than expected. The full juicy orange taste throught is one that would do well in summer, even though it has been released in WInter. Very smooth and fresh, but with a bit of body to it, which goes a long well.

Bottle thanks to Bu11zeye. The smell is fruity, hops, flowers, malts, caramel, and sort of creamy. The look is golden to orange in color with a good white head. The taste is fruity, malts, hops, with a good body.

Bottle thanks to Bu11zeye. Pours a hazy deep gold with white fizzy head. Aroma of caramel, some honey, fruit, malt. Flavor has a faint sweetness, fruit, hops, light bitter. Mouthfeel is light body, high carbonation. It’s ok.
