COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The mikans used in this brew are fresh, succulent, and local -- harvested on the Heda land and by the hand of our carpenter friend, Nagakura-san. The Baird brewers hand-process the harvested mikans, shaving off the outer skin of the peel and pressing the juice. Both peel shavings and juice are added to the brew at different stages of production. The mikans serve to add depth and complexity to an already sumptious ale; their role is to complement, not dominate. In addition to mikans, the 2009 Carpenter’s Mikan Ale incorporates a grain bill including Maris Otter pale ale malt, wheat malt, unmalted wheat and two types of Japanese sugar (sudakito and akato). The hopping schedule features cirtrusy Centennial and Cascade varieties including dry-hop additions to the conditioning tank. The combination of mikans and citrus hops provide an exquisitely complex yet balanced fruit character. The wonderful aromatics of this character waft gorgeously from the billowy white head that forms in the glass. Final transport to beer Nirvana comes courtesy of the tight and spritzy natural carbonation that works to keep you tastebuds fresh and alert.

Great beer, but I don’t get the Mikan at all, maybe it’s ads complexity that otherwise wouldn’t be evident, but don’t expect to be tasting any Mikan here.

330ml bottle pours a hazy golden color with sediments on the bottom of glass and a finger of white head on top leaving only a few spots of lacing. Aroma is oranges and orange zest with some herbal notes. Taste is an orange zest and citrus hop bitterness with a fruity and malty sweetness. Light to medium bodied with good carbonation. Overall, a nicely hopped and tasty fruit beer that is quite enjoyable.

Citrus nose with a dank, hoppy finish and touches of malt. Taste is complex with a moderate hoppiness dominating. There is a touch of sour as well as citrus. Medium body and fizziness. Based on the description, I was expecting something much more challenging. The fruit notes are unusual but subtle. I had this from a bottle that may have been old. Would like to try on tap to compare.

330ml bottle (thanks FatPhil). Clear amber color. Small size, white head, disappears. Old cloth, yeasty, some malts, bit of burnt rubber in aroma. Acidic citrus, tart, spicy hops, grapefruit skins in taste. Grapefruit skins and peel in aftertaste. Medium fruity bitterness. Medium carbonation. Alcohol is hidden which is nice. Bit harsh to drink, but still drinkable.

330ml bottle (Sip, Tallinn) at 7%
Yikes, settled for several weeks, there’s a scary crud in the bottle, gonna need pouring carefully. Pale amber, brief head. Slightly fruity aroma, gentle citrussy aspect. Tingly palate, but quite thin, carbonation doesn’t help. Citrussy and metallic hops everywhere, not much beer here. Does cover the alcohol well, no sign of 7%, it’s almost weak and watery. Leaves me underwhelmed.

Flaska på st Claire Alvesta. Doftar fräscht pilsnertoner . Lite äpple. Omedelbart lite syrligt i munnen sen kommer mer å mer fina humlesmaker. Påminner en hel del om en American pale Ale. Förutom syran i början och alkoholhalten.

@Erzbierschof - hazy dark blond beer with a moderate foam left; light soapy lemony and yuzu nose; a good malt backbone, fair but subtle carbonation, lively palate, some sourness; dry and long citric perfumy finish with light notes of cedar and spices

Even though I don’t rate to style (and ironically I find myself saying that somewhat often in my recent reviews), I enjoyed approaching this one now having any clue what style it might be. With the label saying Japanese Ale (which means nothing to me) and Mikan fruit (which also means little to me), I had no idea what to expect. Poured very cloudy with a heavy yeast sediment and visible particles. Orangish amber. Nose was fruity but more estery than actual fruit, no idea what mikan smells or tastes like. There was a hint of a bubblegum phenol. On the whole this was vaguely in "Belgian strong ale" territory, though I felt maybe there was some element of a lemon rind hop presence, both in nose and flavor. A little more sweet citrus appeared in the flavor, along with the same estery character. Smooth rounded palate, full not heavy. Interesting and good.
