COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The mikans used in this brew are fresh, succulent, and local -- harvested on the Heda land and by the hand of our carpenter friend, Nagakura-san. The Baird brewers hand-process the harvested mikans, shaving off the outer skin of the peel and pressing the juice. Both peel shavings and juice are added to the brew at different stages of production. The mikans serve to add depth and complexity to an already sumptious ale; their role is to complement, not dominate. In addition to mikans, the 2009 Carpenter’s Mikan Ale incorporates a grain bill including Maris Otter pale ale malt, wheat malt, unmalted wheat and two types of Japanese sugar (sudakito and akato). The hopping schedule features cirtrusy Centennial and Cascade varieties including dry-hop additions to the conditioning tank. The combination of mikans and citrus hops provide an exquisitely complex yet balanced fruit character. The wonderful aromatics of this character waft gorgeously from the billowy white head that forms in the glass. Final transport to beer Nirvana comes courtesy of the tight and spritzy natural carbonation that works to keep you tastebuds fresh and alert.

Sampled on 12/12/2009. This fruit beer pours a medium orange gold color form a 633ml bottle. Medium sized white foamy head, with nice lacing and good retention. The aroma is fruity and sweet, lightly citrusy and tart. A medium to light bodied fruit beer. The malts are caramel and sweet, fruity. The hops are citrusy and grapefruity. Lively carbonation. Nice balance. Subtle interplay between the malts, citrusy hops and mikans. Nice subtle and delicate tasting beer. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean, crisp and dry. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

633ml bottle - $9.49 at Hop City in Atlanta, Georgia.

Appearance: Pours a clouded (from some suspended yeast mini-morsels), orange-copper body with a goodly sized, frothed, near white head.

Smell: Fresh, juicy, inviting nose of citrus fruits from the mikans as well as the c-hops floated by biscuit toned malts, a trace of yeastiness, and a hint of dry honey.

Taste: A biscuity malt base with a faint toastiness at the edges and some honeyed sweetness upfront. Citrusy, floral hops with ample bitterness throughout. There’s a very, very mild tartness to that mikan fruitiness. Has some hint of lemon, grapefruit, and mandarin orange. Superbly fruity finish, still faintly tart and a bit bitter.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium-plus carbonation.

Overall: Pleasant tasting, crisp, and very refreshing, though a lessened ABV% would certainly help in that department.

On tap at Naka-Meguro taproom in January. Served in a half pint glass. Golden yellow color with a huge soapy head. Nice lacing. Big mikan aroma with yeast on the nose as well. Yeast and mikan taste are balanced well with tastes of lemon zest, grapefruit pith and a slight cinnamon presence as well. Medium carbonation with a medium to light body. Nice dry, crisp finish. Nice balance between the mikan and hops.

Even though I don’t rate to style (and ironically I find myself saying that somewhat often in my recent reviews), I enjoyed approaching this one now having any clue what style it might be. With the label saying Japanese Ale (which means nothing to me) and Mikan fruit (which also means little to me), I had no idea what to expect. Poured very cloudy with a heavy yeast sediment and visible particles. Orangish amber. Nose was fruity but more estery than actual fruit, no idea what mikan smells or tastes like. There was a hint of a bubblegum phenol. On the whole this was vaguely in "Belgian strong ale" territory, though I felt maybe there was some element of a lemon rind hop presence, both in nose and flavor. A little more sweet citrus appeared in the flavor, along with the same estery character. Smooth rounded palate, full not heavy. Interesting and good.

Sampled at Slutfest 2.0. Good hazy orange pour iwth small whitish head. Sweeter and richer than the summer version. Nose is like spicy woodsy nuttiness. Sage? Unique. I prefer this one. Orange citrus, but not as bitter.

Pours deep chunky orange gold into a snifter. White head with medium retention recedes to skim surface. Grapefruit and orange aromas. Medium bodied with yeast, grapefruit and tangerine upfront turning to a lasting dry, pith finish.

UPDATED: FEB 23, 2014 On tap at Bungalow, 600 yen for 10 oz. It pours a great honey gold with a thick fluffy off-white head & a yeasty full mikan fruity aroma with some citrusy hop notes as well. Great smooth creamy mouthfeel. The taste is well balanced, earthy, mikan, citrus fruits, mild pine bitterness with biscuity malt notes in the finish. The earthiness almost has a chocolate or cacao quality to it. This one gets an A, great stuff!

Keg at Naka Meguro. Smells great, nice orange, bit of lemon too, malty, floral. Taste is good too, less citrus, bit of sweetness, light caramel. Nice refreshing bitterness at finish then orange comes.

Appearance alone makes me want to taste it. Aroma is hard to explain...I have all these images of rustic vegetable gardens and fields. Trying to pull a word from my brain and all I get is "Round". Taste is equally perplexing and enjoyable. This ale is smooth and relaxing while at the same time citrus and lively. Baird out did their selves with this one.
