bomber into a tulip
Slightly hazy orange amber color. White ringed collar. Persistent collar. Good ABV legs.
Nose is sweet and sticky dark fruits, raisin, pear and strawberry jam. Lovely nose.
Taste is pear, plumb, honey, and strawberry. Soft at first but builds quite nicely.
Slick and sweet, though not as bold as US or European attempts but quite nice. ABV burn at the very end.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours dark amber with a fading head.
Nose shows bready malt, doughy notes, melanoiding malt, sweet candy, figs, sultanas. Lovely.
Very similar flavours. Bready and toasty malt, soft spicy notes, resinous hops, sultanas, port. Very rich.
Could use a bit more carbonation.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
An interesting idea this. It poured with plenty of suspended particles and a slow trickle of carbonation. The particles were interesting but not off-putting. A golden colour with a temporary white head. Aromas of dried banana chips, some clove and white pepper, golden syrup and coconut. In the mouth it was rich and oily, sweet with golden syrup again. A lip smacking beer and flavours of orange and mandarin developing toward the finish along with peaches perhaps. I like the idea of a wheat wine, but my companions (noted beer enthusiasts) were a little less intrigued.

Tap at Harajuku taproom. Slightly cloudy, light amber colour, small white bubbly head. Aroma is booze, quite sweet, bit of fruit there too but mostly booze. Maybe marzipan. Lots of alcohol. Taste is sweet, boozy, some caramel maltiness, but mostly booze. Bitter finish with a bit of a booze burn. Some Belgian hints. Itís ok, but the taste is way too booze dominated. Not much there apart from it.

Bomber from Presario. Spot on wheat wine, tasty, fuller mouthfeel, lacey. Cloudy golden body.Fresh aromas. Very good drinkability, like a strong ale with its hops.

A gift from SJ. I havenít had a Barley wine in a while. I forget sometimes how great they are.
This one doesnít dissapoint with its honey, citrus, dark fruit, caramel malt, wheat and hop complexity. I loved it.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
633ml bottle pours a golden orangeish color with a small white head leaving only a few spots of lacing. Aroma is cereal grains and citrus with some other fruits and a bit of alcohol. Taste is big malty sweetness with some lovely citrusy and earthy bitter hop notes and a trace of alcohol. This is quite a bit different than your typical barley wine, but was still quite yummy.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle, shared with Parksy. Bright deep golden with an orange hue and a short-lived low head. Aroma is sweet and fruity, bringing to mind pears-in-syrup, soft mango, and whit grapes. Very aromatic, interesting. Sweet entry of pears, peaches, soft citrus, and something tart and green, starfruit maybe? I donít know, very unique though. Quenching palate as opposed to cloying, which this could easily be but isnít . Nice hoppy bite in the end, grapefruit rind bitterness. I canít classify this brew into a style that matches it perfectly, but who cares! Loved it.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Been holding on to this one for a bit... I assumed it would be similar to an impy hefe so I naturally avoided it. Iím not sure I will "experience a panoply" of flavours because Iíve never seen that word before. Clear light amber with a small skiff of white head that wasnít there after I blinked. Very nice aroma of honey, lime, wheat, tropical notes, pears, peach, weak anise, slight grains and a bit of alcohol when warmer. The taste is wonderful as this is not overly sweet, not a hop bomb and not a total mess of a thousand ingredients randomly brewed together. Yes, there is sweetness but itís not awful - itís actually well placed. Citrusy hops start me off, a wheaty middle is interrupted by some bitterness and the honey smoothness rounds this out. The honey really makes a huge difference here and Iím already planning on more bottles as I totally pre-judged this beer wrong. Pears, touch of alcohol, faint orange. Depth, great taste, amazingly easy to drink, moderate bitterness and carbonation and a bit of tummy heat. Barley wine? I donít know. Who cares? This is straight up an enjoyable easy drinking brew with enough complexity without the confusion and distraction of a mish-mash of flavours. No food today yet, an overcooked bowl of Ichiban awaits, but yea, going to drink this entire bottle because I deserve it. Cheers to me, cheers to my brother and cheers to those who support me.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
633ml brown bottle. I see the date 2010 on the label, so Iím guessing thatís the vintage. Dark gold coloured brew, slight haze, medium sized foamy white cap. Displays nice lacing. Nose is full of wheat malt/cereal notes, light sweet notes from malts - caramel, possibly leaning even toward a light butterscotch, some orangey/citrus hops that are well placed. Flavour has caramel malt sweetness that is cut into by citrusy hops. Alcohol seems present but not obtrusive, coming in late. Aftertaste has wheat malts, a bit tangy, lingering hops which are quite grassy and and also citrusy in nature. Mouthfeel is pretty creamy, smooth, full bodied. Liking this quite a bit, but not loving it. Not sure why.
