West Coast Wheat Wine is a huge beer in terms of alcohol strength. 60 percent of the fermentable extract is derived from malted wheat and this lends a quenching drinkability rare to beers of this strength. The hops are 100% American west coast types that are bold and citrusy in character. In the glass, Baird West Coast Wheat Wine is a deep copper-gold color and sports a very tight, creamy-white head. The nose is piquantly complex -? we detect notes of pears, plums, raisins and the ominous foreboding of alcohol. In the mouth, you will experience a panoply of sweetish honeyed-fruit flavors that are washed clean by a robust hop bitterness and a hot alcohol finish.

Thanks shoulderbroken for sharing the bottle! Poured into a taster showing amber honey tones with no head. The nose shows a deep sugar cane sweetness with notes of honey. The palate is full bodied and lightly carbonated. Low level sweetness with a caramel biscuit maltiness throughout and a moderate bitterness towards the end.

Bottle. Unclear amber with a cream head that lasts OK. Aroma of sweet bread, fudge, grapefruit, nectarines, pale sultanas, plums. Wouldn’t pick wheat. Not that heavy for around 10%, carbonation is lowish and very nice. Sweet and briochy with enough citrus, underripe plums and bitterness to lift much of it away at the end. A bit of a muddle, but a likeable one.

Draught at Harajuku taproom. Dark caramel, apricot, tart, brioche, honey, orange hops, dry finish. Great stuff, one of the best Baird seasonals I’ve had, dangerously smooth :)

Tap. Amber beer, fluffy off-white head. Nose is wheaty notes with sweet malt and something that could be diacetyl. Flavor has less of the creamy diacetyl, a lot of sweetness. Can hardly find the wheat. Finish has more of toffee-like sweetness and malt plus harsh herbal hops. Lacks balance.

Tap at Pudel, Tallinn. Pours slightly hazy golden-amber with off-white head. The head stays for some time. Aroma is sweet, fruits, citrus, alcohol. Flavor is sweet and bitter, fruits, citrus, mango, grapefruit. Finish is long grapefruit bitter with some alcohol. Carbonation is rather high. Overall: nice and interesting brew.

Tap @Pudel. Clear amber color. Medium size, white head, stays. Raw apple juice, sourish, malty aroma. Malty, sweet, sugary, bit of honey and touch of sourness in taste. Long lasting harsh bitterness. Alcohol hits in late aftertaste. Rough to drink easy to leave it on table and run away.

On tap at Naka-Meguro Taproom January 2015. Served in a snifter. Golden orange color with a very thin head. Biscuity and malty aroma with a hint of citrus hops. Taste is more of the same with the sweetness really dominating the palate. Biscuit and caramel tastes present with butterscotch coming out as it warms up to room temperature. Smooth finish with the a citrusy hoppy aftertaste that lingers. Boozy and sweet but interesting. Didn’t really catch much of the wheat...maybe the booziness is overpowering it?

Tap (Pudel, Tallinn)
Nice orange, served and swirls with quite a large head but brief head. Cold, very little aroma here, and the palate was fizzy. Given ten minutes to warm, and a few swirls, I get a lot of sweet stodginess, I think I preferred less rather than more. Stodgy malty body, carbonation still harsh. Finish is like some citrussy zesty desserts that I’ve had. Hops a bit aggressive, but that’s not the problem, the stodginess is. Does cover the alcohol behind its flaws. An odd one. Not for me. Prefered yesterday’s Saku lager.

140 ml glass on draft at Baird’s Bashamichi Taproom. Clear golden brown with off-white head. Aromas of stone fruit, subtle booze. Tastes of stone fruit, some coconut, citrus, caramel, toffee, dark fruit. Medium body with a dry finish. Not big into wheat wines (though I may not have had very many yet) but this was really nice.

beer-yum (994) - Wellington, NEW ZEALAND - DEC 16, 2014
UPDATED: DEC 18, 2014 The very distinctive ’bready’ aroma is not let down by the flavours that follow. A brew that easily masks it’s strength and would be an ideal winter warming drink.
