COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Scotland long has been one of the important centers of beer brewing. The cold climate has favored cultivation of the hardy barley plant in Scotland, while the relative paucity of sunshine has proved problematic for the growth of hop plants. Accordingly, Scottish Ales tend to be richly malty rather than zestily hoppy. Moreover, relatively cool ale fermentation temperatures result in brews that are not highly attenuated -- i.e. they remain rich in residual sugars and thus round and full-bodied in flavor. Noted beer writer, Roger Protz, calls Scottish Ales, "a kind of liquid version of porridge." Baird Yabai-Yabai Strong Scotch Ale 2006 (ABV approximately 6.5%) is, in a word, rich! It is liquid opulence that verges on decadence. It’s deep mahogany color and creamy tan head immediately conjure images of northern country fall foliage. The warming effect begins in the nose, with the wafting of soft fruit esters and warm fusel alcohols. As the aroma dovetails into the flavor, notes of molasses, caramel apples, rum cake and maple syrup perform a fall festival on the palate. Just as a chewy malt sweetness blankets the mouth, however, it is pealed back by the ethereal pull of a vinous character reminiscent of port or sherry. One fulsome pint is enough to take the bite out of the evening autumn chill. Two pints will leave you toastily, and blissfully, warm. Three pints and…. YABAI!

Strong Scotch ale indeed. High powered for the style, and maybe just a bit over the top, but very complete and interesting beer. Lots of cola, chocolate and a funky Bock-like character. Some bitterness late. Drinks well both cold and at room temp.

633mL(?) bottle Pours a deep bronze body, little clarity. Dense off-white head holds very firmly atop, leaving thick lace in its wake. Rich aroma of toasted nuts, sticky date pudding, dark fruits and Port-like dried fruits. Palate is dense, chewy malt texture, lingering a long time, moderate carbonation gives a velvety texture to it. Palate is very sweet upfront and the flavours just open out and evolve; toasted brioche, toasted cashews and almonds and walnuts, cocoa, dried fig and date, mollasses and burnt caramel, plums and pudding and Scotch and, oh god someone stop me...Very complex! Warming alcohol apparent, like any good pudding (haha) and firm bitterness to finish. Wow, this beer is seriously intense. Alot going on, very rich, yet decent amount of balance. Seems a bit boozier than 7.5%, but it’s good to know where you stand!

633ml brown bottle. Deep red brown pour, some haze. Big creamy off white head with sticky lace. Nose is sweet, some citrusy and fruity notes. In the mouth the beer has a big toffee sweet base, some nut, little cherry fruit. Faint hops in the finish, long toffee/malty finish with vinous cherry. Light body, soft carbonation. Interesting. Not right on target as a scotch ale, but pleasant anyway.

Originally Rated 01/14/12 Well pours like a liquid ruby, like this is a red beer, not brown, gold, it is straight up ruby. Deep deep ruby. Smell is sweet caramel some crystal malt bright-sweet aroma, a light amount of red fruit in there, no alcohol, no real hop aroma. Taste is surprisingly fruity, but in a good way. Its not a caramel mess. Its definitely deep caramel malt that dominates, but the fruity character off sets it. its light and not heavy, but still substantial. Slight warmth, but very very slight. Also some savour herbal notes dashed in there. Just really nice beer.

633ml bottle pours amber in color with a moderate off-white head that leaves a few spots of lacing. Aroma is caramel and fruit with a hint of smoke and alcohol. Taste is malty and fruity sweetness with some smokiness and a hint of alcohol. I really enjoyed this brew, quite different than any other beers that I have tried.

Draught at Naka Meguro taproom. Rich red brown colour with small thin frothy beige head. Aroma is smoke and fruit cake and a bit vinous with some cakey yeastiness. Taste is initially smoky and spicy, bit plum, lots of cakey malt. Finish is sweet, fruity and boozy. Lovely.

On tap at Nakameguro Taproom. Mahogny with an offwhite head. Malty caramel aroma. Molasses and caramel flavours. A solid, well-balanced brown ale- nothing less, nothing more.
