One of the better Bakalar offerings. Amber beer, medium bodied. Sweet notes, low hops, slight bitterness. Not the greatest dark lager, but it’ll do.

Euro Market, Queens 500ml ($2): Pours a muddy amber with a little off-white head. Aroma is mild at best with a little bit of fruitiness. Taste is watered down doppelbock. Almost like an American Dark Lager in taste. However, it is actually remarkably smooth and well-balanced in its own weird way. An interesting take on the doppelbock.

Clear amber with an off-white head. Aroma of dried fruit and spice. Fruity sweet malt with light bitterness. Thin body for the style with a stick mouthfeel. Eh.

seymour (1435) - Maplewood, Missouri, USA - OCT 12, 2011
Tasted large bottle from Global Foods in Kirkwood, Missouri, USA into standard pint glass. Poured a clear, dark copper color with weak beige head, faded quickly, no lace. Aromas of syrup, some roasted barley. Toasty, roasty, but almost sickly-sweet flavor. Where are the hops? Somewhat fruitier than you’d expect from lager yeast, but maybe it’s a sign of complex malts. Thin body and mouthfeel. Perhaps they used simple sugar to increase the alcohol, which would explain the phenols as well. Technically, Doppelbocks should have 7-10% ABV, this one says 7.5%. An okay, drinkable dark Euro lager, but a pretty watered-down Doppelbock. Fun bottle design, at least.
