3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Restrained grassy aroma in a golden amber pour. Immensely interesting flavour profile with wheat, spice, and ginger. A refreshing and medicinal brew = subtly unique.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
Classic Baladin brew made with khorasan wheat, myrrh and ginger, an artistic evocation of the beers from Antiquity. Fairly thin and loose, off-white, bubbly head over a misty amber coloured beer with vivid sparkling here and there and a haze of tiny yeast particles suspended in it. Aroma immediately strikes with ancient spices, with indeed impressions of frankincense oil (which probably represents the myrrh) and freshly grated ginger, next to some exotic citrus fruit peel (apparently orange peel has been used as well) and even suggestions of fresh mandarin and lemon zest, some caramel, some mango, hazelnut oil, freshly baked bread, vague hints of chicken broth and dried banana, but a less pleasant hint of rotting hay as well (fortunately subtle). Fruity onset, a bit estery and almost ’Belgian’ with hints of banana, peach and bubblegum, paired with a berry- and even very lightly lemon-like sourish accent, fairly sharp carbonation even numbing the tongue for a brief moment, smooth and somewhat oily mouthfeel but otherwise rather thinnish body, caramelly graininess with a softly sourish ’wheatiness’ but more grainy and less ’soapy’ than the actual wheat you’ll find in a witbier or Hefeweizen. Finish is continuing malt sweetness underlying a strong spice presence, with the somewhat minty myrrh and the spicy ginger returning retronasally in a rather powerful way; a soft, herbal bitterishness is there far away, but not explicitly hoppy. The aromatic oriental spices are showcased in such a way that they are practically the only star of the show: for my personal taste and for drinking it by itself, this beer is just a bit too spicy, like many ’overcoriandered’ Belgian spice beers. Still, this is an interesting concept for sure: I’d recommend using this alongside a chicken tagine or a Thai orange chicken dish - I am convinced this would work perfectly based on the so-called complementary principle.

Orange colour (~10EBC) with a small frothy off white head. Aromas of black pepper, ginger, some hay and incense. Fine effervescence with a light smooth watery texture and a light-medium body. Short sweetness with pungeont ginger, pepper flavours with light astringency. Light spicey finish. Pleasant!

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Tap at Open Baladin in Rome. Dark, near clear amber, head off-white, retention ok, lace too. The nose is pale malts, lagery, faint if any caramel notes, slightly gingery, leafy and herbal. Barberry! Some booze coming through unfortunately. Tastes caramelly, spicy, slightly boozy even. Herbal bitterish finish. Carbonation rather pleasingly medium crisp. Sticky, strong in the mouth. Interesting experiment but a bit disappointing.
