3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
This bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a small sized head of medium sized clear colored bubbles that were quickly diminishing and left behind a semi-opaque with fine particulate softly carbonated dark brown colored body and a poor lacing. The aroma was vinous. The medicinal mildly vinous mouth feel was very tingly at the start and at the finish with a vinous aftertaste. The flavor contained notes of alcohol strong vinous hops and dark malt. Delicious and one I would certainly buy again.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle: 2004 vintage. Thanks, Bennett. Brown body, slightly hazy & murky with not much head; a fine, khaki collar is about all the action, here. Aroma of cognac lathered licorice... Red licorice, not brown. Nearly candy like... Sweet. Toffee, lots of residual sugars of the brown persuasion. Flavors of crème brûlée & sizzled toffee, caramel, light raisin & dark figs, mild red licorice, & a very strong, very pungent sherry-like booze that rings true from front to back. Heavy, thick, strong, sticky, enormous. Light vanilla, syrupy coating with cognac, toffee, raisin, & scorched brown sugar left lingering. Lacquers like a primer. Good, tasty, but certainly a beast.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Sample from 2005 batch at the DBLDP on 08/31/2014. Hazy brownish-amber color with a minimal off-white head that disappears quickly. Sparse lacing and legs on the glass. Boozy aroma with dark fruit and malt in the background. Full-bodied with flavors of roast malt, toffee, figs and hops. The finish is boozy dark chocolate and malt. Like a lower-octane Utopias, and a good beer overall.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Rated on 6-28-2009 (Corked bottle) This beer’s appearance is a cloudy reddish brown body, a lot of floaties and suspended carbonation. The Aroma is caramel malts, hops, dark fruits, and port. The Taste is sweet, vinous, caramel malts, dark fruits, and a hint of hops. This beer has a long dry finish. The Palate is syrupy and dry. This beer is medium-full bodied. Overall, I am not yet a Barleywine drinker, but this one is very tasty and has a wonderful aroma. Like most barleywines, this one is for sipping and would be very warming on a cold winter’s night. This barleywine is definitely worth trying and is one I would drink again.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
2005 vintage served in a Firestone Walker mini snifter. Thanks to sweenzander for the share.
A: Pours a ruby and brownish color mix with no head forming on the pour. A few wisps are present, but overall it’s very still. Reminiscent of Utopias.
S: Boozy and hot, but there is a nice caramel-like sweetness to cool it down a bit. Some notes of plum and dark chocolate with a raisin as well.
T: Sherry like oxidation. Dark cherry with some boozy notes. Raisin with a burnt sugar bitterness.
M: Flat and smooth with a medium body leaning towards the heavier side.
O: A nice sipper, like a Utopias-lite, but not as complex. I definitely wouldn’t drop the coin on this version so I’m glad I could get a share.

4.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
UPDATED: DEC 21, 2012 2004 copper. Been waiting to open this for awhile. Aroma is unimpressive, appearance is plain at best. Taste, however, is a revelation: layers upon layers of silky caramel and smooth malts. Approaching best-of-style for an English Barleywine. Goddamn this is good.
