From the bottle at Open Baladin, Roma - 04/10/12. Review #1000 - clearance time ! Slightly opaque chestnut brown with no head or bubbles, still as ! Nose of alcohol, peat, dark berry fruits, wood tones. Tastes herbal, medicinal, smoked bacon, sweet caramelised sugar, dark caramel, woody, smoke. Full bodied, no carbonation, smooth, rich, complex, boozy! Top stuff!

2006 vintage. Pours a dark copper/chestnut brown color with mahogany edges when held to a light.  Completely still with no head or lacing.  Definitely has legs though after an aggressive swirl. Sweet, boozy aroma with a nice smokes malt character and Port/sherry like qualities.  Musty and leathery malt along with sweeter touches of hazelnut, caramel, toffee and dark fruit.  Can pick up a lot of booze but it’s not as strong as in some of the other versions.  Becomes more complex as it warms with subtle honey and fruit notes. Medium bodied with very delicate carbonation.  Not as still as some of the other treatments but almost flat. That little bit of carbonation really makes a difference.  Boozy sweetness with leathery and sweet malts notes and a  lingering smokey finish.  Strong alcohol presence along with sweet caramel, toffee, dark fruit and honey.  Fruit notes most prominent toward the finish with some fig, raisin and plum.  Smoke is all in the finish but it lingers and definitely adds another level of complexity.  Nice warmth in the finish but not as harsh as the other versions.  High ABV is relatively well masked.  Hard to believe how much more I like this than the regular copper version, especially the smoke presence.

Very hazy amber beer, no head. Zero carbonation. Smooth semi dry palate. Sweet malt with traces of peach and orange but it’s mostly banana cream. A little caramel and aniseed. Then mild sherry and gentle smoke. An amazing beer and Baladin have this small corner of beer styles sewn up!

Sample from bottle. Clear amber color, flat. Aroma of vanilla, maple syrup, burnt caramel on toast. Taste is burnt maple syrup and brandy. Very tasty, but has no beer characteristics. Works as a digestivo.

I’d have rated this a tad bit higher if I like the taste of peat... if you like scotch, you’ll like this. No carbonation, pours richly and flat into the glass. The smell lets you know you are about to taste something VERY unique. Smell is smokey, sweet, with alcohol. Oh no... but NO, the taste does not have a boozy taste. Mostly sweet smoke with a little tea, slight alcohol finish. Very rich, but the bottle is small, so it can be a 2 person brew. Complex and amazing, if you find one splurge.

Huge thanks to Masterski for bringing this one to the Stone tasting. Served in a SAVOR glass. Pours a moderate caramel color without much of a head. Perhaps some legs after a bit of a swirl. The nose brings great notes of sherry, sweet malt, caramel, and light fruit, plus a lingering smoke character in the background. The flavor is similar with a greater emphasis on the smoke. Body is medium and sweetly chewy without really any alcohol. Really nice and smooth. Glad to have tried this.

10 cl pour from the bottle at Open Baladin Roma, side-by-side with the Gold label and the Luna riserva. Aroma of Lapsong Souchong tea, plum, spices, chai, smoke. Slightly medicinal. Reddish brown, flat. Flavor of smoky tea, caramel, raisins. Huge sweetness, smoke and berries. Great palate. Very nice but the Gold is better.

Picked up at Knightly Spirits December 2009, I think. The 500mL bottle pours clear deep copper with no head. The moderate strength aroma offers up sweet sugary cherries and prunes as well as smokiness that takes on sort of a light peaty sense at the end of the draw and upon post whiff reflection. The taste is expectedly big with bold smooth sweetness where flavors like prunes, ripe cherries and dates seemed to be thinly covered by brown sugar. Toward midway some dry smoky pork and a bit of peat come to the surface taking this into the finish. It leaves a pleasing smooth smokiness, sweet slippery dark fruit esters and a faint sense of peat heading into the after taste. Yummy and interesting brew where the huge ABV is hardly noticed.
