2.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 PorterPounder (4101) - Tallahassee, USA - JUN 29, 2003
Odd look, feel and flavor to this one. Muddy pour with very little head to it - bit of lacing though. Aroma - hard to place - reminds me a little of pumpkins. A bit too much carbonation to this - overrides the flavor. The muted flavor - a little bit of nuttiness. A bit of a metallic aftertaste as well.

Bottle. Old rating. Evidently granite is fermentable. Tastes of liquid rock with mud and chocolate. Further proof that Great Grains is EVIL and should NEVER, EVER be allowed to exist. Ever.

Bottle. Nice color but not too impressed with the head. I was expecting a little bit more malty/nutty flavor. Overall, interesting and drinkable but not something I would look for.

I reserve the right to remain silent on the grounds that what I say may come back to haunt me. I've known people connected with this. Had a good one or two and too many that should never have seen the light of a cooler.

SOUR. I am wondering if I got a bad bottle. It has a barleywine like aroma, and the beer is sour.... I will be willing to try another bottle... this one might be off.

Nice fruity aroma -- like the sweet portion of the grapefruit smell. Hazy, muddy brown beer with BB-type bubbles that cling to the sides of the glass. Dry, and I didn't find much of the Fuggles in here. Very lightly sweet and a little starchy, but really just not much flavor. Watery with a very quick finish.

I really try to give these Texas micros a chance, but I just couldnt cut this one any slack. Just a weird freaking taste that didnt resemble that of a brown. I DO live directly above Balcone Fault.

Allow me to begin by saying that I have resolved to stop bashing small breweries who try but don’t succeed. This one is going to make it rather difficult. The aroma took me back to when I was 14 and worked at my uncle’s landscape supply company shoveling dirt and rocks and stuff. Mulch with manure in it ain’t a nice smell, and spending one summer as a teenager doing that will make you decide that you’re going to go to college. This beer smelled somewhat like that. Hints of tobacoo were also in the flavor. In other words, it smelled like a Texas cowboy bar. The only redeeming features were a malty sweetness and a slight hop bitterness toward the finish. In an unrelated note, the Balcones Fault runs almost exactly under an apartment in which I used to live.

Wow! The sourest damn brown ale I’ve ever had. Like a Doc’s Hard Lemon drink. Very English-style in its lack of hops.
