Allie (40), USA Aug 29, 2007 This was my dad’s old brand in New York years ago, so I had to try it. The first batch I had was rather nasty, others were much better. The can is a simple, classic design and the beer looks quite attractive when poured. Pretty fair head, moderately long-lasting. No lacing that I saw. Clear, medium gold color with some small bubbles. Carbonation not excessive. Has the sour, ’beery’ aroma typical of mass-produced lagers. Thin on the palate, but not too watery. Flavor is so-so, not as strong as a malt liquor but with more character than other nostalgia brews. Some bitterness and hops on the end, especially when drunken from the can. It has a pretty good kick, which is a plus in my book. Price is quite good for the amount you get. You have to hunt a little in my area, but it’s becoming fairly common in the bigger stores. If you want a cheap beer, you should take it over the other cheap stuff in the case. I know it’s not great, but it has some positive features that lift it to the head of the nostalgia beer class. It’s one of my brands now, too, just like it was my dad’s.
RCL (1113), Waltham, Massachusetts, USA Sep 30, 2008 Had to try this one for the history. Pretty clean grain aroma and flavor, with just a hint of fruitiness in the aroma. Not terrible. dmac (916), Toms River, New Jersey, USA Sep 3, 2008 12 oz bottle. Pours a good looking clear gold with a fluffy bright white head. Aroma of vegtables, corn and wet grass and grains. Medium body with fizzy carbonation. Weak flavor of stale grain and vegtable soup that finishes with a touch of bitterness. Blah. theshocker (328), Marietta, Georgia, USA Sep 2, 2008 Ahhh the legendary Ballantine ale. Been wanting to try this for a while. Too bad I’ll never get to try the IPA. This blonde isn’t bad though. 3.6% of all blondes...really people? Maybe I got lucky and got an unskunked sample. I get a very light hop aroma. Clear yellow, small white head. Flavor is smooth, slightly fruity aftertaste. Smooth finish, medium body. urnamesucks (92), New York City, New York, USA Aug 21, 2008 Drank it out of a can. Didn’t pour anything, just drank it. Nothing to write home about, but better than others.
jredmond (633), New Jersey, USA Aug 18, 2008 This beer tastes like it was brewed before any escalators. Horrible. Skunky aroma and taste and hard to drink. Found this little billie to be pretty offensive.
