Cask gravity at Dover Beer Festival 2006. Very dark red/brown colour. Funky aroma, strong and sickly. Strong dark and funky. Frankly, I didn’t like this one bit.

3rd LCRBM. Sweet apples, almost like calvados in the aroma. Sweet and sour flavor with malt, raisin and flowery hops. Red berries. Rather alcoholic, still a nice beer.

A Mes rate: Bottle at LCRBM3. Dark amber with no head. Flat and sour with caramel, raisins, plenty of malt and some fruit. Big alcohol finish. Lackng balance. Not a great barley wine.

Cask (gravity dispense) at White cliffs Beer Festival, February 2006. Mid brown colour with ruby highlights. Definitely odd aroma. Funky lambic/Belgian sour character. Don’t know whether that was intentional but I rather liked it. However, it does not sit too well with the developing sweetness on the palate. Otherwise, its woody with caramel and plummy fruit flavours. Very odd, but I didn’t have a problem with it.

13th May 2008. A ’liquer beer’ for ’cookimg or mixing’ says the label. Initially a shock to the palate it soon settles down to a sour malt beer that is quite mouth watering. Low carbonation.

Medium brown appearance with a minimal and quickly departing head. A pretty potent, heady nose showing plenty of alcohol. Just smelling wamrs you. Besides, the flavour focuses mostly on a vinous fruitiness, with the usual Ballards acidity to go along with it, but more like fruit acids this time. Cidery, yet medium-thick bodied, liquorous and plummy palate. Perhaps my favourite Ballards barley wine just because of the different take its acidity takes.

Dover Fest, 2006 Wild yeast aroma - slightly vinegary. Obviously strong and sweet. Interesting. Crude. Ugly.

Bottle. Pours chestnut brown with just a few bubbles alongside the glass- the look of a barley wine for sure (even if I normally like to see a richer head). Nutty aroma with a hint of raisins.Nutty flavours, with caramel and raisins mingling in- still quite bitter towards the finish. Sirupy texture and velvety mouthfeel. A rich and wonderfully complexbarley wine- obviously (from the other ratings) it has stored better on bottle than on cask.
