Bottle. Pours chestnut brown with just a few bubbles alongside the glass- the look of a barley wine for sure (even if I normally like to see a richer head). Nutty aroma with a hint of raisins.Nutty flavours, with caramel and raisins mingling in- still quite bitter towards the finish. Sirupy texture and velvety mouthfeel. A rich and wonderfully complexbarley wine- obviously (from the other ratings) it has stored better on bottle than on cask.

Bottle conditioned. Clear chestnut brown with sparse off-white head. Sweet strawberry aroma, some toffee and other dark fruits. Sweet fruity taste; raisins, nuts and caramel with some light hops in the finish. Very smooth and creamy full bodied mouthfeel. A little bit too sweet for me but very good.

3rd LCRBM. Sweet apples, almost like calvados in the aroma. Sweet and sour flavor with malt, raisin and flowery hops. Red berries. Rather alcoholic, still a nice beer.

Cask (gravity dispense) at White cliffs Beer Festival, February 2006. Mid brown colour with ruby highlights. Definitely odd aroma. Funky lambic/Belgian sour character. Don’t know whether that was intentional but I rather liked it. However, it does not sit too well with the developing sweetness on the palate. Otherwise, its woody with caramel and plummy fruit flavours. Very odd, but I didn’t have a problem with it.

Aromas of old strawberries - very astringent/acidic, not in gueze range tho. needs time to open, found it got better later on. Better than first impressions suggest.

Mungo (2472) - Southampton, Hampshire, ENGLAND - OCT 8, 2006
BCA. Reddish brown and flat. Fruity toffee aromas, raisins and currants mixed in with liquoricey treacle. A sweet full mouthfeel with some woody earthy hop flavours creeping in towards the end. The hops dont add much bitterness so this ends on a fairly sweet note. Whilst I like the sweet flavours of dried fruits and liquorice I normally don’t enjoy them too much in a drink when this sweetness is the main feature. Although pleasant seems slightly simplistic.

Ethereal (2399) - Los Angeles, California, USA - JAN 13, 2008
Bottle. Pours a chestnut brown with a persistent tan head. Near-zero carbonation. Aroma of raisins and caramel, a bit sour. Fruit and malt with some alcoholic warmth. Thick palate. Decent barley wine.
