Inspired by the Rauch Bier’s of Bamberg Germany, Abandon Ship Smoked Lager contains German Malted Barley smoked over Beechwood and fermented cold with lager yeast. Imagine a Märzen/Oktoberfest-style base beer with a sweet, smoky aroma and flavor. Deep amber hues and low bitterness help the non-smoked crystal malts compliment, not contrast, the smoky/savory taste of this.

"Wow...NOT seeing the lowball scores here (though maybe they were working out the kinks in 2006). This beer was great. The smokiness and malts reminded me of Sclenkerla beers, though not quite in Urbocks league. Pretty nice, though. Balance of smoke and malt is wonderful. A bbq beer all the way."

Fantastic smoky aroma; amber appearance with a frothy off-white head; light, but distinctive smoky flavor over a light bitterness; relatively silky on the palate with a sharp fizz and quick finish; overall, a very good representation of what it claims to be--a smoked lager ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

A golden amber lager with a thin white head. In aroma, smooth biscuit malt with nice peaty notes, light mineral notes, nice. In mouth, a nice biscuit malt with fruity notes, maple, and light peated malt, nice. On tap at Aces and Ales tenaya.

A very drinkable smoked lager. Smoked flavor is strong up front but the finish is far more like a light Marzen. A fine novelty.

Tap. Pours clear amber with a medium, frothy white head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is smoked malt, ham, and earthy hops. Flavor is malt and smoke dominant with a sweet finish and a clean lager character. Medium body and carbonation.

Appearance: Woodsy copper, dark peach and apple skins. Clear. Khaki head fades into a thin collar bordering small patches of bubbles. Swirls alright.
Nose: Gentle smoke – like standing in front of a smoker with beech wood and applewood while bacon and pork chops sizzle. Caramelized brown and demerara sugars along the sides. Cinnamon brown sugar spiced apples on top. Tree bark. Smoked cracked malt and crackers.
Palate: Smooth silky mouthfeel carries gentle liquid smoke with beech wood and cedar notes. Salty umami savorance in the back – maple, bacon, and caramelized pork. Smoke in the breath. Smoked apples with a demerara glaze. Slightly dry finish quenches and induces thirst all at the same time. Smoked crackers and smoked peaches. More bacon, smoke, pork, beech wood and applewood in the middle. Lovely.
Final Thoughts: A solid well balanced smoked (Rauche) beer that would make any German proud. Smoked beers aren’t for everybody, but I love them and historically speaking, beers have been smoky far longer than they have not. Thankfully despite modern advances, this classic beer style has not been lost.
