3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
A big and well reputed west coast IPA. I’ve acquired Anderson Valley’s Hop Ottin for contrast. Medium opaque amber, fading tan head. Aroma tends towards citrus over pine, with a discernible malt presence as well. Bitter at the fore and sweet across the middle, flush finish. Medium body that is not overfilling. Not a hop bomb; I understand there is a beer called Sculpin that fills that need. Nicely balanced.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Has a fresh and bitter aroma of citrus, yeast and caramel. Pours amber with a lasting white head. Has a round taste of caramel, citrus and pine. The finish is spicy and bitter, but not out of balance.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Beer pours with a luscious warm amber, building and maintaining a thick creamy head. The aroma is relatively subtle with piney and resinous notes; there are little flowery characters in the nose. On first sip, I realized that I had just drenched my thirsty chasm with sticky needles and sap that could take an afternoon to peel off my palate. Subsequent tastes allowed the malt to come through, but the bitterness dominates.
Moving the hops towards later addition would better match the style, or perhaps a bit more malt sweetness of of a DIPA for the hops, but this bitter representation of a west coast IPA is quite satisfying, as long as you live at the far end of Vinnie’s "Lupluin shift". Overall, given my own penchant for hoppy beer, I enjoyed this one; it provides an honorable analog to a peaty Islay scotch, which similarly delivers enjoyment to a few, dedicated aficionados.

Sweet aroma, very citrusy as well. Small head, clear copper pour. Malty backbone. But long bitter finish. A simple bitter IPA, solid.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
22 oz. bottle served in shaker- poured a very slightly dulled copper color with very slowly rising carbonation, solid one finger frothy head formed and laced extremely well upon the vessel. Aroma of a whole lot of grapefruit as soon as I opened the bottle and didn’t even pour it yet, pine, vanilla, and a hint of strawberry. Hits the mouth with a wide body, hops immediately kick you in the jaw, laugh, and spit in your face, malt doesn’t taste like it slept with caramel through the night which is highly refreshing, middle holds up well, finish is harshly acidic with pine biting through you. Don’t know if it’s because I hadn’t had a brew in 6 weeks or so, but this one is dandy. Fine and dandy!

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
A bit sedimented with the bottle, didn’t know if that was supposed to happen. Haven’t had sculpin yet. This one is pretty good though. The aroma is potent, but not the strongest hop aroma. The best way to describe this beer is solid, but unremarkable. Big C hops doing their usual things. If you changed the label on this beer, you could easily convince me it’s any other mid/high tier IPA. That means it is still a good IPA that I like drinking, but it tastes really familiar.
