If you have fallen for the IPA style like we have, Big Eye will be a welcome addition to your repertoire. You’ll revel in Big Eye’s bitter, hoppy flavor thanks to the American Columbus and Centennial hops that are used to flavor and dry hop our flagship IPA. We thank our hops every day that the English loved their bitters—or else the IPA style may not have been born to help the beer survive the journey from Cape Hope to India back in the 18th century.

12oz bottle into snifter glass. Clear orangy-amber color with off-white head. Aroma of strong citrus and floral hops with caramel malt backbone. Taste is bitter upfront ending with malt sweetness and some fruitiness. Light body, medium carbonation, bitter, dry and clean. Quite tasty and refreshing.

7%ABV. Double IPA Poured out a deep amber.  18ºSRM. Nose is full of citrus brightness with an ester sweetness, bringing to mind orange peel and citrus blossoms.  Maybe a hint of lavender in the nose.  Very pleasant. The palate is bitter and overall aggressively hop-balanced.  There is a good strong base of full bodied, malty and nutty and flavors. There middle of the palate is round, sour and umami.  The fer The finish is hyssop bitter. Goes on Favorites List!

On draught.
Pours like an orange-ish color with a thick off white head and lots of lacing on the glass.

The aroma is mostly hop dominated with plenty of melon and grapefruit. It’s got a light piney character and a touch of caramel maltiness.

The flavor is a touch on the aggressive end bitterness-wise, but it’s got enough juicy melon like hop flavor to more than compensate. It’s got grapefruit, a little bit of resin and some citrus zest. It’s towards the drier side but it’s also reasonably malty with some toastiness and some toffee lingering in the background.

This is one of those IPAs that actually employs specialty malts fairly liberally and with great success. At least for my palate it’s a risky game to play bringing a higher bitterness with a bigger malt character. Prior to this draught sample I’d never had a bottle of this beer that wasn’t just terrible, which is testament to how IPA, particularly one built in this manner needs to be very fresh. As is, this beer is wonderful. In six months everything that makes it great will be gone or out of balance.

Anyway, that’s a good wall of text that I needed to type to justify me loving on an IPA that’s outside of my normal "guidelines"

Clear dark straw pour with clingy white foam leaving a ton of lace. Aroma is deceiving, as I get a lot of malt and some tropical fruit belying the full blast of hops to follow. Flavor is big pine resin up front with a lingering, but balanced bitter finish. Interestingly different from Sculpin, and almost as good.

Nice aroma of grapefruit, some pine, and orange. Nice deep gold color. Huge off white head that sticks. Sweet malt up front, Rich caramel. Nice malt backbone to hold up to the bitterness that creeps in. Bitterness is smooth, notes of pine and earth, intensifies nicely. Rich mouth feel from malt, bitterness coats nicely on the finish. Solid.

From bottle (best by May 2016) in Belgian ale glass. A nice mix of hop aromas from citrus to pine leading to a broad bitter palate. Hoping to visit the brewery in the not-to-distant future.

355ml Can from Brewdog online shop (£3.00):
This one is another excellent IPA from Ballast Point, it falls slightly short of the can of Sculpin but that is more down to the fact that Sculpin was a truly world class beer. Big Eye is a very hop-centred beer with lots of pine & grapefruit coming through whilst not being as bitter or dry as Sculpin IPA, great stuff & one I’d definitely like to try again.

Can. Pours burnt amber, fairly clear, a big 2-3 finger creamy beige head. Aroma- caramel, chocolatey malt, grapefruit, pineapple juice, hop resins, pine needles, smells very nice. Taste- bitter hops, hop resin, orange peel, pineapple, grapefruit, with creamy caramel malt undertones. Mouthfeel is clingy and the finish is long.
