On tap at BP Old Grove: Dark brown with ruby highlights and a light brown fading head. Aroma is smokey with a hint of cocoa powder. Flavor has some dark chocolate followed quickly by a smokey pepper burn, a hint of coffee finishing with a light coffee bitterness and lingering heat on the back of the tongue. Pallate is light to medium and velvety with soft carbonation.

peppers!! Wow that’s hot! smokey character. just way too hot for me and undrinkable.

Balast point chipotle black marlin porter. 22oz bottle thanks to
tim!... Pours a medium cola brown pour with lighter edges and a thin
film of light beige head... Peppery odiferousness with a sharpness to
it. Overpowers everything else.. flavors are predominantly focused on
the pepper nature which grasps, takes hold, and never leaves. Porter
qualities are left grabbing for a chance to appear but never really
let’s go. Thin to medium bodied. Overwhelmed by the amount of heat.

A: The beer pours a dark brown color with a finger of tan head.
S: Really quite smokey with lots of earthy tones, so the chipotle is really coming through. Plenty of roasted malt and only a mild dark chocolate/cocoa aroma to it. Not really much sweetness.
T: I was surprised how much spice this beer had to it. A big kick of heat from the chipotle peppers which also impart a big time earthiness and smokiness to the beer. Moderately roasty with a more pronounced chocolate quality to them.
M: Medium in body and carbonation.
O: The chile pepper is quite strong, but I thought it was pretty decent and it worked alright with the chocolate and porter base.

22 oz bottle shared at Kan’s. Thanks! Pours a nice murky brownish pour, some lighter edges, with a decent frothy tannish brown head. Laces small. Aromas are some lighter cocoa, toffee, and toast, touches of roast and light peppery life. Initial is medium to lighter bodied, some moderate chili bite up front with some good earthy chiles, light cocoa, toffee, and roast. Some coffee, toast, and biscuits. The chiles take over a bit, moving into heat, pepper. A bit overwhelming. Warm finish. Interesting, not bad. But the peppers really take a dominant hold and is a bit harsh/not as well integrated as hoped for.

On draft at bruery provisions. Reddish copper brown with tan head. Aroma is roasty and spicy. Taste is similar with nice sharp smoothness. Good stuff and not too spicy with a lil smoke.

dark brown body... the nose is nice, chocolate with some chili, no hint of what was about come... taste starts off with chocolate and some hot chili, too hot though, as you drink it gets hotter and out of balanced, volcanic... not something I can recommend

On tap at Linda vista location. Nice sharpness added to smooth porter/stout. Not overpowering. If you like the heat in beer, you’ll like this one.

UPDATED: JAN 23, 2011 Growler of Chipotle Cocoa Black Marlin. Pours dark with a nice light tan creamy head. Nose is chocolaty with waves of chipotle smokiness in the background...it took me a while to find the smokiness for whatever reason, but after about 6 or 7 ounces, it certainly comes to the forefront of the nose. Flavors are much more concentrated on the cocoa aspect than the smokiness of the chipotles, which is kind of a letdown, but the capsicum heat is certainly present, which is good..in fact, this is a nicely spicy beer and you definitely feel that heat for a good time afterwards. Mouthfeel is on the medium to thin side of the spectrum.. I really like the heat here but I just wish it was more smokey because it really just isnt as smokey as it needs to be. Kind of let down..but that being said, there’s still subtle smokiness riding in the background, so all is not lost.

Tap at the brewery in Old Grove. Murky brown color, tan head. Aroma of mild chocolate, coffee grounds, pepper. Taste has LOTS of pepper which dominates the beer, could use a bit more malt offset, but the hop profile is nice.
