Keg at the Ballast Point taproom - San Diego. Pours rich black-brown with a frothy tan head. Good chili kick in this one, balanced by dry, bittersweet baking cocoa. Medium bodied with average carbonation. Lingering semi-dark chocolate finish, chili punch, some burnt earth. Solid.

"Another pepper beer, another winner. It doesn’t hurt that these are mostly excellent beers to begin with, but damn...where will it end. The super smooth Black Marlin is still such, with hints of bittersweet cocoa and smokey chipotle spice (mild) in the nose and flavor. Another treat."

Dark brown pour with small beige head. Aroma of roasted malts, cocoa, peppers and chocolate. Taste of roasted malts, unsweetened chocolate, hint of coffee, some earthiness, charcoal, and a chili pepper hotness on the finish, also powdered cocoa on the finish. Medium bodied, nice carbonation, a little too spicy on the finish for me.

(Rating #5525)

Deep dark chestnut brown slight visibility but unable to see thorough. Smells of nut and pepper. Spice that slowly grows over a walnut hazelnut base. Warming.

My Bottom Line:
Roasted malts, lengthy chocolate, blackberries and chipotle heat are ably aligned in this well-balanced Porter.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam covers the brown-hued black.
-Chocolate malt flavors are as long as the chipotle heat.
-The chipotle is not overdone, which I appreciate.
-Mouthfeel is leaner than I expected.
On tap at The Dirty Truth.

Nice malt dark aroma nice burn on the throat. Smoke flavor and burn of chipotle. Give it some camp for name and it would be amazing.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at Lunar Brewing Co. as a 12 oz. serving, dispensed to a Czech-pils glass, showing a black/brown color, with some ruby highlighting, tan head froth, and curtainy cling to the lacing. The nose was maybe a touch of cocoa, not much roastiness, but more hints of cherry, vinous notes, and a bit of tartness. The flavor then presented a lingering, peppery quality that slowly escalated in intensity as the tasting continued, and roastiness that was substantial, but more coffee-like than cocoa. Medium+ bodied, the alcohol was fairly hidden, and the carbonation successfully enhanced the peppery, and only moderately restrained bitterness into the additionally dry finish.

On draft at Ballast point in Little Italy.
Similar appearance to the regular Black Marlin porter. Dark brown, nearing black, with a thin beige cap. The aroma brings the pepper heat right away. The flavor has all of the characteristics found in the base beer, but these are overshadowed by spicy heat. A beer like this walks a fine line. How do you showcase the chipotle and retain a balanced, drinkable beer? A fun experiment and worth a try...once. A sample pour was all I needed. More than a few ounces would fatigue my palate rather hastily.
