A hoppy twist on the classic English Porter. Our Black Marlin Porter stands out in a town known primarily for its IPA’s. We craft it from a unique blend of roasted and crystallized malts that give it a smooth, chocolaty, caramel profile. Then toss in a healthy dose of American hops to serve up full-bodied flavor worthy of its San Diego roots.

Editor’s Note: Old versions were 5.9% abv

Pours a clear dark brown with a beige head and lacings. Medium to heavy sweetness with a light bitterness. Aromas of grains and roasted malts. Bready hint. Light piney hops aromas. A bit over medium bodied. Soft carbonation. Dry finish with a tiny hint of metals.

On tap at Ballast Point brewery in San Diego--Coffee body with tan head. Earthy, nutty, spicily hopped. Clean, crisp, roasty but not overly so. Good representation.

(bottle) Pours black with a light tan head that rings around the glass. Smell alternates from dry cocoa, roasted malt, to a more fruity cherry smell with a light hint of tartness. There are also scents of coffee and chocolate, and a hint of pepper as the beer warmed. A subtle smell of smoke or smoked/salted meat is detected when deeply inhaled. All in all, pretty pleasant on the nose. The flavor is also quite good, with a lot of dark chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, and just a terrific roasty/chocolatey, lightly sweet finish that lasts for a long time. With the medium mouthfeel and lower ABV, this would make a really good session beer.

[Bottle, thanks Guerde] Pours brown with a tan head that fades to just a ring. Aroma is cocoa, light estery sweetness, and light coffee. Taste is dark chocolate, roasted malt, light peppery notes, and just a hint of light fruitiness. Medium-thin mouthfeel with a long finish of mostly roasted malt. Really quite a solid porter.

Probably my favorite porter. It has a nice, full tongued hop profile - a chocolate and coffee flavor, and ends on a dry note. Pours coca-cola brown with tan head that recedes quickly. From a 22 oz bomber.

Draught Brown-black beer, no head to speak of. Coca-Cola pearling. Slightly smoked, black malts, roasted, slight cigar. Very light on the roasted side, a bit of chocolate, and more cigar flavour. Good balance for this 6% (so indicated at the brewery blackboard), not watery and quite smooth. Good, if not stellar porter.

From what I remember, this was a really nice porter with a good deal of fruity notes to accompany the dark, roasty aromas and flavours. The nose is ripe berries (probably due to esterification in the bottle), cocoa, cappucino and NW hops. The flavour boasts a stronger coffee presence with the same berry suggestions found in the nose, some buttery, lactic tones, pleasant roasted malts, chocolate and some piney hops. The mouthfeel was a bit thin with soft, creamy carbonation (not actually carbonation) and the finsh was long and dry. This would be a fine session brew

22 ounce bottle. Pours dark brown with mahogany highlight or two. Creamy beige head with some lace left behind. I smell oats in the nose. It reminds me of a Starbucks Frappaccino, or some other sweet coffee drink. Pretty chocolaty with a sturdy bitter finish. Very full body. Average carbonation. Dry finish. I’d drink this anytime.

Pour from a bomber delivered a black shade with a thin tan head. Aromas of coffee and dark toasty malt. Good mouthfeel and then flavors of cocoa, smoke, vanilla and mild hops. Nice balance and overall a good solid brew.

Pours near black with a slight tan head, Aroma of chocolate and roasted coffee. Taste the same with a slide into a slightly bitter finish. Med-light mouthfeel and combination.
