A hoppy twist on the classic English Porter. Our Black Marlin Porter stands out in a town known primarily for its IPAís. We craft it from a unique blend of roasted and crystallized malts that give it a smooth, chocolaty, caramel profile. Then toss in a healthy dose of American hops to serve up full-bodied flavor worthy of its San Diego roots.

Picked up a growler at the Home Brew Mart. Pours very dark brown, nearly black, with a thick, foamy, tall, stubborn tan head. Very nice lacing. Pleasant oak and whiskey aroma laden with cocoa and caramel. Smooth, lightly carbonated mouthfeel. Kept true to the porter style in texture and in taste without becoming a stout-lite. Roasted malt and caramel up front with roast coffee. Not bitter or acidic. A more subtle approach with the bourbon; it stays int he background and does to overwhelm the beer itself. Mellow oak and vanilla as well. A bit of bitterness shows through in the finish as the beer warms. Very nice beer.

Growler from SJ. Nice notes of Wood, bourbon, roasted malts, chocolate and hop. Nice roasted finish, good booze flavor, not bad.

Draft. Exceedingly dark brown, small bright tan head. Jack Daniels completely overwhelms both the aroma and the taste.

Snifter on tap at the Brass Tap. Near-black color, with a good thin khaki head. Leaves nice, thicker lace. Medium to bigger body. Velvety smooth, lighter carbonation. Lightly slick texture. Very nice, noticeable amount of bourbon barrel, big vanilla, and lightly woody, spicy whiskey flavors work great with the chocolate, light coffee flavors of the porter. Moderate bitter, moderate sweet taste, and just a mild hint of bourbon-type alcohol warmth that is actually pretty pleasant in this application. Fantastic barrel-aged porter, very satisfying. Supremely enjoyable, well-done stuff. Strikes a near-perfect balance. Iím ok with paying $6.50 for the 10oz glass.

On tap at The Local in San Diego. Dark brown pour with ruby on the edges and a small khaki head. Aroma is some light roast, heavy sherry and rum booze (does not smell like bourbon here). Flavor is a rather disgusting combination of roast and straight up cheap whiskey (oh, hey Black Velvet) and is barely drinkable. Way light bodied, way to thin for the bourbon barrel aging. I could not finish a 3 ounce taster of this one. It was really bad.

On nitro at Old Grove. Pours a pitch black with a thick tan Head with exellcent lacing. Aroma is of bourbon, roasted malts, coco, and a little booze. Taste is similar to the aroma but also has some coffee and grassy hop notes. Has a medium body with a slighty watery mouthfeel and a slighty bitter, medium finish. Overall, a pretty nice BA porter.

Tap at Churchillís for SDBW. Pours a deeper brown, cola highlights. Low foam. Mild bourbon nose, small sugar, no tomato past, small vanilla. Taste is thinner than expected, watery, low abv canít handle the barrel aging. Didnít come out as intended.

Cola, oak, and chocolate aromas. Bourbon kicks in on the first sip. Good body. Slightly sweet with dark fruits and licorice in the finish.

On draught at Aces & Ales in Las Vegas. Pours dark brown with a medium foamy tan head that diminishes gradually. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of bourbon, vanilla and malt. Medium-bodied with flavors of roasted malt, oaky bourbon and vanilla. The finish is mildly boozy with a roasty malt aftertaste. Pretty good all around.

A deep dark stout with a thin brown head. In aroma, smooth mix of bitter chocolate, licorice, and bourbon barrel. In mouth, nice chocolate cherries with bourbon notes, wood and licorice over earming alcohol.

Pours dark and thick with a creamy white beige head. The aroma brings some brown sugar sweetness and then a bit of vanilla and oak. The flavor brings a shot of bourbon, smooth though, but falling short on body and complexity in general. For 6% that makes sense though, so overall I think it is a decent brew.
