Poured into a shaker. Cloudy orange with a cream colored head. Aroma has some sweet caramel maltiness and a lot of citrusy hop notes with some pineyness. Taste is caramel malt sweetness with citrusy hops. There is also some earthiness and pine present. Full bodied with a long finish and some alcohol present. Overall a very good DIPA.

Draft@Brewdog Leicester. Cloudy golden beer with a strong white head. The aroma is mildly yeasty and hopped. The flavour is very well hopped with loads of bitterness and dryness. Overall a very nice IPA. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

I have a feeling many beer drinkers will find Ballast Point Dorado to be reminiscent of other San Diego DIPAs they’ve had over the years, I know I did. Not that that’s necessarily a criticism (or a compliment) – just an observation. Big citrus and tropical fruit aroma and flavor with an equally hefty body and mouthfeel. It’s very good even if it’s been done before.

I poured a 12oz bottle into a tulip glass. It was bottled on 2/11/15 and cost $3.85 ($0.32 per ounce).

Appearance: Bright, pumpkin skin orange hue. Body is translucent, though there’s no individual particulates visible. Pours to a large, white, frothy head which laces and retains beautifully.

Smell: Surprisingly sweet with a scent akin to candy or sugary cereal. Citrus juice concentrate and flowers are prominent as well (as is some alcohol).

Taste: This is full-bodied beer in all aspects. There’s a constant combination of rich malty sweetness and dank hop flavor and bitterness. The malt base is reminiscent of a very strong amber ale but without any toasted malt character or perhaps a really strong English ale as there’s a slight orange marmalade component. The brewery’s website indicates a bitterness rating of 90 IBUs, but it is not especially bitter because it is so well balanced. These hops are more for flavor and aroma, though there is a strong bitter sensation right on the finish. The alcohol is noticeable, but not distracting and seems to accentuate the sweet side of the palette by creating for a light vanilla flavor.

Drinkability: Weighing in at 10% ABV, Ballast Point Dorado is a big beer by any measurement. Thankfully, it doesn’t have the intimidation factor a beer of that magnitude usually incurs. The mouthfeel is thick, sticky, and a little cloying in the aftertaste as these hops linger and dry out the tongue. It is comfortable in the mouth and down the gullet despite a warming sensation from the alcohol. One serving is plenty satisfying.

Score: 8/10

Pours a nice golden color with a lasting head. Light aroma of grassy hops. Nice taste, with a nice palate. Dunno, doesn’t seem that special

Bottle from Brewdog webshop, Coventry, consumed at home Friday 10th July 2015 Pours dark gold edging towards light amber, looks great, clear as a bell, white head atop. Wonderful bitter IPA though with that typical American sweetness, still it’s bloody good, lots of citrus, nice sweet orange, a little punchy, it’s good, really good. A7 A4 T9 P4 Ov16 4.0

You can tell from the start this is serious craft brew. Presents in a sniffer perfectly. The high ABA is not hidden as well as some brews. Taste of citrus is ever present about long finish and bitter but not unlikeable. High marks on this fine brew
