UPDATED: MAR 12, 2010 the last rating i did for this was when i was a little drunk and gave it a perfect rating, and im not sure it deserves that. a fantastc DIPA, exactly what you want in an imperial ipa, citrusy, floral, a little grapefruit but not overbearing, and a little hint of pine. a really nice beer that i enjoyed the second time just as much as the first time.

Source:Sample from a 22 oz bottle at a tasting in Nashville.
Appearance:Hazy gold pour with a huge white head.
Aroma:Pine and citrus dominate the nose, with a hint of caramel. Lots of fruit on the nose.
Flavor:Heavy citrus, caramel, mango and spice.
Palate:Medium/full body with mild carbonation.
Overall:Carbonation could have been a bit higher, but an excellent beer overall.

Tap at ACBF. Aroma really nice with lemongrass, tangerine, flowers, pine. Flavor gets a bit dulled down by annoyingly chewy and sticky malt. Absurdly heavy. My nose liked it a lot...

Pours hazy pale gold with a light peach core. Thin creamy white head that has good retention and leaves some decent lacing. Aroma is big cirtus hops, some pine, a little grass, melon, pineapple, some light caramel, toasted biscuits and fruit blossoms. Flavor is juicy citrus up front, more pine than the aroma would suggest, peach, melon, sweet grain, biscuit, white bread and limeade. Finish is increasinigly piney hops, hanging on to some grapefruit and pineapple and picking up some peppery notes and passionfruit. Palate is medium bodied, juicy entry with a moderately dry (not very dry at all for an IIPA) finish, carbonation is maybe a touch on the light side but I wonít knock it for that, the "juicy" feel more than makes up for it. Really good stuff overall, a great example of a delicious west coast IIPA.

I loved this beer. I picked it up on a whim, since I hadnít seen it before, and Iím really glad I did. It pours a nice orange amber color with an impressive creamy white head. The nose is full of citrus, pine, tropical fruit, (pineapple), and some caramel maltiness. Not too sweet though. The taste is awesome with tropical fruit, peach, florals, and big time pine in the end. Itís medium bodied and not syrupy at all, just the way I like it. A well balanced, beautiful example.

Someone sent this as a bonus and I really appreciate the exposure to an up and coming brewery. If Ballast Point beers ever cross to Ohio I will check them out based on the two that I have had so far. My only concern is that they seem much better fresh; age affects the experience dramatically.

Aroma / Appearance - The huge pillowy head contrasts nicely with the rose gold opaque body. Grass seed, hay, wet flower beds, and hops hit the senses all at once. Without being over the top this is as close as it gets to being in your face.

Flavor / Palate - Honey, melon, grapefruit, and tulips wash pleasantly across the tongue. The warm resiny aftertaste keeps the hop flavors around for a while; only after fifteen minutes did they begin to fade. An excellent example of the West Coast style of hopping a beer to the extreme this one strikes a nice balance between hops and malt that makes it easy to drink.

22oz. Bomber. Golden orange color with a nice collar of white foam. Nose is big on hops with grapefruit aroma dominating and fresh pine lingering in the background. Taste has notes of orange peels, caramel, malt sugar and pine resin. Initially a bit citrusy and sweet, but a well balanced bitterness pervades the flavor towards the end. Mouthfeel is slightly creamy, with a bit of oilyness and a moderately high level of carbonation. Finish is dry, lingering and bitter, but not overpowering. Simply stated another 2IPA winner from S.D. Get some if you can.

Bottle courtesy of FogDog as an extra! Kevin you are awesome, thanks a bunch! Pours a hazy yet oily orang with a huge off white head. Aroma is grapefruit, malt, pine, and juicy citrusy hops. Flavor is citrusy hops, with a huge malt backbone to back it up. Slightly thick syrupy yet oily mouthfeel and finishes with bitter resinous grapefruit hop bitterness. One of the better DIPAís out there.

Tap at ACBF 2009: Hazy golden with a dense off white head. Rich fruity hop aroma- lychee, peach and mango juicy with resinous notes. Dense creamy carbonation. Very piny flavor- fruity peach undertones and bitter minty pine flavors. A balanced and tasty IIPA with solid rounded bitterness.
