4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Old quick review from 2009 - Ballast Point makes a ton of beers but this is there only Double IPA and its a really good one. A great mixture of floral, citrus, and piney hops. Easy to drink and crisp. These guys are just amazing. The one – two punch of Sculpin and Dorado is one of the best out there.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours a slightly cloudy, golden amber/orange color with a two finger, frothy white head that slowly settles into a thick, lasting cap. Chunks of soapy lacing left behind.
Dank, uber-fresh hop aroma with lots of earhy pine and sweet fruit notes along with subtle malt presence. The smell of hops fill up the room once I removed the cap. Pine needle and buds along with tropical/citrus notes and biscuity malt.
Chewy full body with a blast of dry, earthy bitterness that is excellently countered by sweet tropical and citrus fruit notes along with a pale malt backbone. Sticky, dry pine needle followed by hints of pineapple, mango, grapefruitand orange peel. Biscuity malt backbone provides subtle balance without taking away from the hops at all. The ABV is noticeable with subtle heat in the finish but it’s really well masked considering the strength. Just an outstanding hop bomb of a beer.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Golden peach. Creamy, tight white head. Soft tangerine hop aromatics are tarnished by notes of resin and honey-soaked malt. Pointy carbonation. Slightly creamy. Initially juicy with tangerine and a vibrant cushion of orange pith. Dense pockets of oily resins coat the teeth and distribute sporadic intensity. Floral softness lurks beneath the feathery touch of lightly toasty malt dryness which keeps the oils from reaching oppressive levels. Plentiful soft citrus and hop flavor rather than predominant high-alpha bitterness, though the flavor profile of the hops isn’t particularly lustrous. Finishes with a bitter tease of orange zest fused with the succulence of nectarine juice and peach which effectively absorb creeping hop-derived chalkiness. This doesn’t quite make my heart sing, but it’s better than most American IPAs as it boasts abundant hop flavor to combat some of the resinous onslaught which this ultimately suffers from. Would love to see the alcohol at 8% or less...

3.2 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
slightly hazy orange amber with a medium sized fluffy white head. Huge Simcoe+ other Cascade family hop aromatics. Grapefruit, other zingy citrus, and resinous pine notes. Rich sweet citrus hop base, complementary. Hints of apricot, grapefruit, and citron in the finish with a reserved astringency and bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium large, slightly chewy, and slowly builds to a balanced dryness.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Somewhat of a cloudy copper with a white head. Orange juice-laced Pac NW citrusy hop nose! Pretty sweet, there’s a solid amount of residual sugars in here to balance the bitterness, which is ample. Very citrusy hop flavor - grapefruit/orange. Full, round and creamy on the palate with moderate carbonation.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours a crystal clear amber/copper with a big fluffy white head that sticks around forever leaving a sticky lace all over my glass. Smells of hops mostly, odd for a double IPA :) Pine citrus grapefruit, all the usually suspects. Hints of sweet malt 3 miles underneath the onslaught of Humulus lupulus. Taste is not quite as bitter as I expected, or my palette has been ruined from the IPA’s of late. Citrus and resin dominate, but the sweet taste of caramel peeks in somewhere in the middle before losing the battle to a lingering grapefruit finish. Thick body, bitter resinous mouthfeel, medium carbonation. Not a bad IPAx2
