Odeed (1473), Bakersfield, California, USA Dec 5, 2006 Updated: Apr 15, 2007 clear orange body with not much head to speak of.aroma was very nice and mixed up ice tea, orange sherbert, pine needles,grapefruit....wow.it goes on forever.flavor is a mix of the same with a bit or caramel malt thrown in as well.mouthfeel is super sticky and the brew slides down the throat.the palate lingers on for minutes and all i can think about is grabbing my snifter for another sip.this is truly a world class beer and a fine example of a west coast/san diego ipa.
DA (2376), Portland, Oregon City, Oregon, USA Aug 13, 2008 RBSG 2008, from the bottle at the brewery. Pours gold, very clear, with a smooth white head. Pine and sawdust in the hop nose, sort of resiny/earthy quality to it. Flavor showed a bit more citrus, hints of grapefruit come through in the finish. Crisp and refreshing double IPA. mabel (1583), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Aug 12, 2008 [1507-20080704] 22floz bottle. Orange pine resin aroma has a touch of sweet citrus. Hazy, medium orange body with a medium-lasting foamy off-white head. Orange citrus flavour has some pine resin but is mostly bittersweet seeds. Medium body is bitter. Generally well-balanced.
(w/ jerc, manuchampions, tupalev) bsierra (162), Vista, California, USA Aug 10, 2008 Had a while ago at Newport Pizza and Ale house, just found some old ratings I’d written. Pours bright golden orange color with a medium sized, dense, off white head. Aroma is wonderful, floral hops, citrus, pine, mango. Flavor is caramel, biscuits, pine, mango, grapefruit. Palate is full bodied, medium carbonation, bitter finish. I really dug this one and was really stoked on it!
jasonp (1440), Sterling/Dulles, Virginia, USA Aug 9, 2008 Sampled at Ballast Point, RBSG ’08. Somewhat of a cloudy copper with a white head. Orange juice-laced Pac NW citrusy hop nose! Pretty sweet, there’s a solid amount of residual sugars in here to balance the bitterness, which is ample. Very citrusy hop flavor - grapefruit/orange. Full, round and creamy on the palate with moderate carbonation. Good stuff. NosirIwont (863), Aalborg Vestby, Denmark Aug 4, 2008 Bottle. Pours a beautiful, hazy, deep orange-amber with a big, creamy off-white/yellowish head. The head soon sinks, but leaves a fine lacing all the way down the glass. The aroma is dry hops with a faint hint of liquorice. As it warms, notes of pine escapes the hops and a wooden maltiness appears. In the vicinity of the glass there’re remote whiffs of port. The moment the beer enters the mouth, the flavour is sweet and fruity in just a split second, but lurking behind it there’s a mean hop bitterness waiting to strike – in a sudden instant it’s there, overtaking the flavour, filling the mouth, almost paralyzing the taste buds to anything but itself. When the taste recovers, notes of pine and strong, but well-balanced alcohol is found. The moment it’s sunk, the bitterness turns to liquorice in a slightly astringent finish that also reveals notes of plums and apple well hidden behind the bitterness. Palate is thick, bordering oily, and almost laces the mouth. A great beer. 05-08-08.
