COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Ten different malts and six different hops (Ahtanum, Cluster, and Spalt to name a few) combine to create this full-flavored, small beer. Even Keel features a silky malt backbone and a bright hop flavor and aroma that come from the late kettle additions and dry hopping with 1.5 pounds per barrel. Even more layers of flavor are created with fermentation being done by two strains of yeast. This session ale is herbaceous with additional citrus aromas of lemon and grapefruit. The orange to copper hue draws you in and the low alcohol volume keeps you coming back for more.

Can poured into a pint glass. Pours dark orange with a tan head. Aroma is mostly citrus. Taste is unique for an IPA... mostly caramel and brown sugar sweetness. Smells like an IPA but drinks like an Irish red ale. Not bad, but not what I’d expect from a session IPA.

Can - golden pour with white foamy head. Nose of light citrus. Taste of light citrus and medium hop bitterness. Good for what it is but I wish it had a stronger fruit sweetness presence. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Sample at Ballast Point. Really a solid beer. Tons of hop aroma and flavor, pours a beautiful clear orange and I could drink a lot. Really nice and flavorful, balanced and just overall good.

Tap sample. Poured clear golden color with an average to large frothy white head that mostly lasted with excellent lacing. Moderate citrus hop and earthy aroma. Medium to heavy bittersweet flavor with a heavy bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. Medium to full body with a slick texture and soft carbonation. Solid brew.

Draft at Dutch’s. Pours a hazy golden color with a large fluffy off white head. The aroma and flavor have some toasted bready malts, grass, herbal hops, mild plus bitterness, a bit watery, but decent overall flavor for the abv.

Pint on tap at Dutch’s. Very convincing, is my initial impression. Good Moderate to bigger bitter taste, minimal sweet. Mostly clear red orange color. Nice Thin off white head, with good retention. Good bits and splotches of lace. Nice piney aroma, some orange citrus, caramel biscuity malts. Lightly toasty. Medium, maybe slightly lighter body. Very satisfying, convincing session IPA.

Draft to taster. At Dutch’s. Looks solid; a transparent light golden orange with foamy off-white head. Smells of balanced hops and sweet pale malt. Tastes like it smells, but more bitter an sweet. Fairly light on the palate. Solid beer.

Good session ale, and I do not mind the terminology. Very good orange flavour. 50 IBU. Very nice for 3.5% abv.

April 15th, 2012 - I’ve never seen Ballast Point’s Even Keel in a bottle, but I can see this being a popular San Diego session beer for folks with long nights of low-key entertainment ahead of them. As it were, it suffers from being part of a line up of tasters at the actual brewery, with spicier beers here and there talking over Even Keel’s more measured style. But I can still see where this is an excellent, high quality pale ale. The brew is a light, maple color, glowing with refracted light, and sporting a decent cap of large beaded bubbles on the head. The nose is light, made lighter by the diminutive stature of the tasting glass, and has pleasant notes of tangerines in simple syrup, and the earth sweetness of graham crackers. And like it’s namesake, it is a stolid, rocksteady beer on the flavor. Mineral water and slight change from a blank mouth filling sensation to a low, murmuring malty glow is just what one hopes for from an ESB. Even Keel isn’t technically an ESB, but it would find itself in good company with one.

Pint at White Lady (JDW) in Corstorphine. A brown colour with a hint of red. Small head.
