4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Ballast Point is becoming one of my favorite and most-respected breweries since they’re willing to try anything and they’re really good at what they do. Fathom is their newest brew (at least around here): yet another IPL, but it’s one of the most well-rounded and thorough IPLs I’ve had.
I poured a 12oz can into a mug. It was canned on 5/22/15 and cost $3.80 ($0.32 per ounce).
Appearance: Deep golden color with a mostly clear body; carbonation visible. Pours to a two-finger, beige, soapy head which mostly dissipates but leaves some lacing.
Smell: Intense piney/resin scent. Earthy with a touch of spice as well as a minor citrus note.
Taste: If I were drinking this blind I’d probably assume it’s an East Coast-style IPA since it has all the makings of a traditional entry of the style. The hops are prominent here (obviously), but in the way Atlantic breweries traditionally made them with an earthy/sticky/resiny/dank pine flavor. There’s a strong bitterness here, but it’s balanced out well by a surprisingly sweet malt presence. Notes of caramel and a bit of butterscotch or lollipop are noticeable. A bit of a dry spicy sensation at the apex with a quick bite hoppy bite as it finishes. Perhaps there’s features to this reminiscent of a strong doppelbock, though I appreciate the San Diego devotion to hops.
Drinkability: Ballast Point Fathom tastes and drinks like an ale despite being a lager. The mouthfeel is quite full-bodied with a fairly calm, slightly viscous texture. The hops linger on the tongue and leave a resiny aftertaste. At 7% ABV there’s actually a noticeable alcohol presence in the form of flavor and warmth, though it’s easily tolerable.

2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Nice foam and a golden color. The aroma is very suttle and almoast alcohol notes, but not bad in any way. The typical Ipa flavors are there and a nice ibu level. Balanced nicely.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
I don’t know if I’d have guessed that this was a lager if you’d served it to me blind. The hops are huge and up front in the aroma and flavor, the lager yeast that shows up on the tongue is very reserved. This beer pours a clear, golden color with a lot of suds. The aroma is slightly sweet, but mostly grassy/pine hops. That’s the flavor, too, but if you know to reach for it, you might pick up on a sweet, caramel lager character. Not bad, but not the best thing I’ve had from the brewery.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
A clear rich burnt orange infused golden body with a great looking large fluffy white crown that settled slowly leaving alot of broken lace behind.Aromas were yeasty with overripe citrus fruits and a bit toasted bread,a hint of sweet booze as well.Flavors of somewhat sweet doughy bread with a big shot the overripe citrusy hops, again the yeast plays a big role.I really liked this hopped lager,it actually seems bigger than what it is.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bomber to tulip. Pours a clear, serious gold with clingy head. Nose is super floral upfront, fresh foliage, some juiciness and pine riding slimly under the radar. Crisp flavor of bright citrus, unique floral/sweet-leaf-dominated palate, clean finishing with light bitter and malt-sticky linger. Irrisitably balanced mouthfeel with low carbonation. Always have enjoyed this one a great deal.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
355ml can from Systembolaget, Nyköping. Amber color, thick dense white head. Nice citrusy, piny, grassy, spicy hoppy aroma. Flavor continues the same, hoppy fruitiness, citrusy. Creamy palate, very quaffable. Could not tell this is a lager in any way. Fresh.
