COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Lager meets IPA in a winning combination.

Our Fathom India Pale Lager combines time-honored lagering techniques with the hop profiles of a West Coast IPA recipe. The cold-fermenting lager yeast provides a clean base that allows the citrus and pine aromas from the hops to really shine. The result is a gold medal beer with a refreshing, easy drinking character and just the right amount of depth.

on tap at ballast point old grove a couple months back. again, sorry for the limited notes on this one. pours a pale gold with almost no head and just a touch of lace. aroma is surprisingly great with notes of fresh peaches, apricots, orange peel and oddly, peach ice cream with a touch of pineapple and crackery malts. flavor is damn nice as well with big tropical hops, pine esters, and a touch of toasted malts with light floral esters on the finish. palate is light bodied and definitely sessionable. overall, a pleasant surprise for sure.

On tap at Ballast Point in August 2009. Poured a nice golden color at the lighter end of the spectrum, but well within a lager’s range. A nice white head on it. Smell is strong with hops--lots of pine and a bit of backing citrus and floral. Taste was nice and resiny with little malt backing. We had a few IPL’s on the trip, and this one was right up there with Humulus from The Bruery. Nice mouthfeel and fantastic drinkability. This is an emerging style I’d like to see more of, and Ballast Point has absolutely nailed it. Serving type: on-tap Reviewed on: 02-17-2010

An IPL, why hasn’t anyone thought of this before? This has a considerable amount of berry hop flavor which kind of defeats the point of a lager as these flavors were mistaken for ale yeast characteristics. Pale, balanced, but the idea just didn’t taste as original as it sounds.

11/10/10 notes: My first thought is skepticism. Is this gimmicky? Ballast Point removes all doubt upon first sip. Pour is orange-blond in color, crystal clear with long lacing. Hop character is minty, tropical, and leafy, very vibrant overall. Clean body, crisper finish than most IPAs. I like how the flavors seem to jump out of glass. Great beer that’s hard to discount or disparage.

A hop head delight. A beer to seperate the men from the boys. Real beer, Great stuff. Another winner from Ballast Point

Draft at Stone Bistro. Pours a clean orange-amber with nice white head. Aroma is green hops (citrus lemon and lighter notes of pine and grass) and a grainy maltiness. Flavor is full of bright hops and includes notes of bitter citrus (grapefruit and citrus peel), lemongrass, and lesser hints of tropical fruit. There is a decent level of maltiness for balance, too. The finish is really nice -- the crisp and dry-ish finish is one of the few things that reminds me this is a lager. Very well done, Ballast Point. (44, 412)

Draft at O’Brien’s. Clear golden pour, sticky white head. Very hoppy, citrus, pine, grapefruit, slightly grassy, and a bit of tropical fruit. Light musty lager malt background. This was excellent and drinkable for an IPA... but lager? wow nice.

Clear golden with a medium to large off white head. Aroma had diacetyl, malt, caramel, butter and grassy hops. Flavor had plenty of diacetyl, grassy hops, pale malt and butter. Finished buttery, dry and bitter.

A damn fine beer, I would drink it until my liver gave way. Nothing offensive at all, just beer bliss. Would get again fo sho. not too dry, but fairly dry, bright hop flavor, very citrusy and juicy, pears, pineapple, hint of classic lager body. great beer.

UPDATED: MAR 5, 2014 My Bottom Line:
From crisp cereal crackers bloom herbal and citrusy hops whose bitterness seems to rise into sandy and resinous realms. This India Pale Lager is yet another testament to this brewer’s prowess.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A slice of foam laces nicely atop the clear golden.
-The nose is as assertive as the flavour profile that follows.
-The biscuit cereals have honeyed angles.
-The body is cracking with deft malts and the soft prickling of carbonation.
-This is really the best of two worlds: the flourishing hoppiness of West Coast IPAs and the crisp drinkability of Pilseners.

Bottle and on tap at their Linda Vista brewery.
