Lager meets IPA in a winning combination.

Our Fathom India Pale Lager combines time-honored lagering techniques with the hop profiles of a West Coast IPA recipe. The cold-fermenting lager yeast provides a clean base that allows the citrus and pine aromas from the hops to really shine. The result is a gold medal beer with a refreshing, easy drinking character and just the right amount of depth.

Clear golden pour with a nice white head. Slightly bread/biscuit forward nose with plenty of floral, pine, and citrus hop aromas. Very heavy on the pine, in fact. Some mild malt sweetness to the flavor. A bit of alcohol, lots of pine and floral hops, some bitterness, and a hint of grass. Light herbal quality and citrus peel, too.

This poured a clear darker straw yellow with a white head. Aroma was crisp fruity hops, some grass and crackery notes too. Flavor was bright fruity hops, like a lager version of sculpin only lighter. great stuff.

Tap at Ballast Point. The beer pours to a glowing golden body with a white head. Aroma is hoppy and fruity. Flavor is bitter hops with a dash of sulfur. Lots of grains like an artisan bread. The palate is bitter and medium bodied.

Tap @ PP Carlsbad. Clear golden pour with a thick white head of foam. Aroma is dry, bready malt with pungent floral hops and pine. Taste is hop bitterness up front with some malt sweetness and more pine/bitterness into the finish. Clean drinker. Doesn’t taste like a pilsner to me; more like a clean, lager/IPA. Good beer though. I’d buy this if bottled.

Tap at MT. Straw golden with one finger of off white head, some webby lace sticking to the shaker. Nose is citrus, light booze, grassy, and herbal. Flavor is lightly sweet, medium bitterness, light resin, slight astringency. More hoppy and less sweet than many imperial pilsners I’ve had. I’m grateful for this.

pours a orangey straw yellow with a small white head and some lacing. Aroma is of citrus, grass, pine, pilsner malt, bready malts, and some tropical fruits in the background. Taste is of citrus, tropical fruits, pilsner malt, fresh cut grass, and baked bread. Has a medium body with a super creamy mouthfeel and a nice dry, bitter, refreshing finish. Overall, a excellent beer that I would classify has a cross between a IPA and a pils.

Tap. Pours a nice golden yellow color with a white head. Aroma is super hoppy, with lots of juicy hops, some sweet orange, tangerine, grapefruit, some tropical fruits and sweet malts. The flavor is also nice and juicy, with lots of the orange and tangerine, tropical fruits, sweet malt and is not too bitter. The body is on the lighter side of medium with a dry mouth feel. Overall one of the best hoppy Lagers I have had!

Draft. Poured straw with a medium-sized white head. Aroma was floral hops, grass, bready malt. Nice yeasty notes. Frankly, this got lost in the midst of tasting other, more strongly flavored beers. Would like to try this again.

UPDATED: JUN 19, 2013 Original rating (2.9): Meh. Draft at brewers kettle in HP. This one didn’t do it for me. Definitely a hoppy lager, but I am not in love with that style. The hops were more metallic, and thin. ReRate: wow. So good. The aroma is grassy and green, taste is almost fruity hops. Very citrusy, papaya maybe? Don’t know the big difference from my original rating, probably has to do with the beer before this beer (in both cases), or maybe this batch was way better.
