Lager meets IPA in a winning combination.

Our Fathom India Pale Lager combines time-honored lagering techniques with the hop profiles of a West Coast IPA recipe. The cold-fermenting lager yeast provides a clean base that allows the citrus and pine aromas from the hops to really shine. The result is a gold medal beer with a refreshing, easy drinking character and just the right amount of depth.

From Hopleaf. Clear copper pour. White fizzy head with wet yeasty spots. Streaky lacing. Smells of deep deep resin, crystal malt, some grass/corn. Tastes dry, bitter, resin, light spice. More lager-y in the taste than the aroma. Body is medium-to-thick, slick and crisp with a bitter dry spicy finish. Nice.

22oz bottle from QClub at home. Clear golden honey pour with yeasty crop circle-y head. Aroma is lager-y, with a surprisingly strong pine resin hops - nice. Taste is, not unexpectedly, like a straight up piney IPA but with the crispness and seeming lightness of a lager. Tingly bitter finish is nice. Dry. Fairly malty for this style. Would get again.

Aroma is odd and mild with menthol tones, hints of biscuits, gooseberry bush and fruits. Flavour has menthol, some grainy malt, fruity tones and glue. Finishes with some grassy tones and minerals. A total disappointment.

Pours dark orange with a small white head. Aroma of grassy hops, piney notes, resin, citrus and earthy notes. Taste is malty, crisp and sweetish with some stuffy old hoppy notes, grass, resin, pine and grass. Finish is sweetish, a bit musty and stuffy with some resin, pine and aged grassy hoppiness. Not very fresh.

22oz bottle pours clear dark orange with 2 finger head. Nose is sweet honey orange, some tangerine, light grass, bsicuit and subtle citrus. Taste leans toward sweet malt, orange zest, candy citrus, toast, honey, some light peach and tangerine juice, medium bitterness. Finishes mildly sweet with a continuation of the palate and some lingering sticky bitter orange.

From a bomber into a snifter. Pours a very light, clear blond with not much lacing or head. Nice lemon zest aroma. Mouthfeel is light and clean, as expected. Flavor is an exceptional balance between a smooth, clean lager and tropical and grassy hops. Nothing bitter about this at all. Drinks like a 5% rather than a 7% beer. Really like this one. IPLs are very hit or miss, but when they’re good like this one, they’re really good. Also, plus points for it only being $5.50 for a bomber... but minus points for not having a date on it.

Tried this brew for the first time at Jacob’s Field in Cleveland. I had heard a lot about this Brewery, so it was a natural choice when I saw it was available. Reminded me a lot of Bell Two Hearted Ale. Hops were very noticeable, but the other flavours balanced it quite well. Unlike other IPA’s where the hops are overwhelming, which is not my taste. I was not disappointed. Will be looking for this beer again. MB
