Our Sculpin IPA is a great example of what got us into brewing in the first place. After years of experimenting, we knew hopping an ale at five separate stages would produce something special. The result ended up being this gold-medal winning IPA, whose inspired use of hops creates hints of apricot, peach, mango and lemon flavors, but still packs a bit of a sting, just like a Sculpin fish.

One time Honkey texted me and said something like, "I bought a six pack of habanero sculpin. I drank 1 of em, and now I have 5 that I don’t know what to do with." And this dude’s got a damn cat named Habanero. So I just got a single bottle. The heat definitely hits you in the back of the throat, but it’s not unpleasant. A bit of the base beer comes through, but mostly it’s just heat and pepper. It’s aight.

Tap at SB. Pours a hazy medium gold with orange highlights. Creamy off-white head that sticks around for a while. Bright oranges and grapefruit on the nose, clear spicy pepper note coming through with the orange-y note from the habs. Creamy medium body with lively carb. Light caramel, oranges, grapefruit, and heat on the mid palate. Long hot dry finish. More fun to mix with other beers than to drink by itself, but it certainly has a devoted following all its own.

Aroma is grapefruit/pine, citrus hops and a hint of spicy heat. The flavor is grapefruit, citrus and then the habanero takes over...

On draft. Golden yellow hue with descent white head that has medium lacing. Apricot and orange hints quickly become outdone by the heat. Its a fun experiment to get creative with what beer can be but this becomes undrinkable after a couple sips. Subtlety could play a better role here. Still fun to see the boundaries pushed, so no fault in that.

Bottle from Vinmonopolet’s BU. Amber body. Some white head. Grapefruit, citrus, malt nose. Grapefruit, lemon, citrus flavour. After a couple of seconds, a heavy chili warmth completely destroys every other flavour. Some malt flavour. Medium, oily body. Quite soft carbonation. Bottle is way to old, Vinmonopolet and the swedish importer should know better!

ON bottle from Vinmonopolet Norway, on order. Slightly hazy golden color. HIgh aroma intensity; habanero completely dominates (and makes you sweat), also hops, caramel , some fruitienss and vanilla. Medium body & complexity. Good bitterness and balance. Enjoyable, but spicy as hell!

Clear amber color, big tan head. Quite ordinary nose with grapefruit, caramel, tropical fruit and a hint of chili. Caramel and tropical fruit taste at first, then the chili kicks in. The taste of chili is heavy and dominant, grapefruit is noticed somewhere between the heat waves which last and last all the way to the back of the throat. The bitterness is neutralized by the warmth. Medium body, soft carbonation, warming chili.

Bottle@home, from WineSpot, Cleveland, USA. Medium aroma with clear, organic habanero over basic IPA notes. First, saltier peppers, then sweet components in nicely layered fashion. Bronze color with small/medium staying white head. Clear liquid. Light taste unless you count the habanero which is really intense. Mixing IPA flavors and habanero is succeeded well and habanero flavor is very organic. The problem is that there’s too much of it. The burning masks or at least dampens other flavors. Somewhere far back a hint of fruits and malts. Narrow/medium taste spectrum with medium aftertaste of some malts. Burning lasts much longer. Light/medium palate. Overall, considering taste the idea is feasible but with much less habanero.

Draft at The Pour House in Westmont, NJ. Pours a slightly hazy, dark golden orange color with tangerine edges and a 1.5 finger white head that slowly settles into a lasting ring. Streaks of soapy lacing left behind. Complex aroma with an interesting balance of ground pepers, earthy hops, tropical fruit and pale malts. Somewhat chalky with noticeable peppers but they don’t interfere too much with the base beer. Slightly vegetal with pepper, orange peel, grapefruit and pineapple along with graham cracker and biscuity malt. Similar to aroma with a bit more pepper than I expected. Still it doesn’t completely overpower the characteristics of the base beer. Earthy, piney hops followed by sweet pepper and fiery heat that builds, lingering throughout. Some tropical and citrus fruit sweetness but this is a bit muted because of the peppers. Subtle pale malt backbone with hints of biscuit, bread and cracker. Pretty complex with a nice heat/pepper addition but some of the best elements of regular sculpin are overshadowed as a result.
