COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Sculpin IPA is a great example of what got us into brewing in the first place. After years of experimenting, we knew hopping an ale at five separate stages would produce something special. The result ended up being this gold-medal winning IPA, whose inspired use of hops creates hints of apricot, peach, mango and lemon flavors, but still packs a bit of a sting, just like a Sculpin fish.

Tap at Ballast Point. The beer pours to a dark amber glowing golden body with a white head. The aroma is simply 100% Sculpin with no peppers. The flavor is Sculpin, but it showcases the delicious flavor of the habanero pepper. I thought it had some heat, but not in that way that most of the spicy beers are (green peppers and hot). This beer was a marvelous rendition in that the pepper component came through as expected, rather than a nasty green pepper with heat. It actually blended quite well, and was a highlight of the evening!

Type: Draft Glass: Pint glass From: Clem’s Tap House in Kensington (San Diego), Calif. Price: $5 (for Happy Hour) Purchased: July 24, 2014 Consumed: July 24, 2014 Misc.: N/A Poured a honey, orange, murky color with two fingers of frothy white head when I got it. Good layered foamy lacing along the sides. Good retention on the top all the way down. Wow on the smell! Got citrus hops, pine and floral hops, then bam! Here come the spices. Got jalapeno, habanero and red peppery spices. Already feel it on my nose and mouth somehow. Late orange rind notes. That’s pretty much it because the hot spices dominate. Taste was pretty much the same as the smell. Got those citrus and floral hops, but then the jalapeno and habanero spices come flying in. Also spicy red pepper notes dominating heat on the hops. Really wanted more hops here. Not balanced at all. Medium body. Oily texture. Average carbonation. Long, spicy finish. A decent beer for what it is, but just too spicy and not enough hops.

On tap at city beer. Nice fruity, spicy aroma. Taste is immediate burn but not too intense. Lingers for a while but in an almost pleasant way. Unfortunately no hint of IPA but still a very interesting and enjoyable chili beer ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On tap. Copper orange colour. Aroma of peppers. Taste of peppers, hot. Intersting at the beginning, but too much in the end.

bottle shared by tom10101, thanks (!). hazy golden with a small off-white cap showing some retention and lacing. citrusy, apricots, spicy and hot habaneros - overdone is a euphemism here, underlying lean lightly toasted and fruity maltiness, pepper. average carbonation, light body, awfully hot and grassy-spicy finish. undrinkable.

Bottle thanks to SantaSD. Light pepper notes in aroma, light earthy hop character, touch of caramel malt. Mildly hazy orange with off white head. Big heat on the first gulp, after heat subsides, some seet balance to the heat, malty, some earthy hop flavors, mild bitterness but must the heat comes through in the finish. Lingering heat in the throat. Not really much pepper flavor just spicy. Not a pepper beer fan but this has some sweet to balance heat but still quite spicy overall.

7/31/2014. On tap. amber color with a white head. Aromas are spicy with only hints of peppers. Flavors are caramel and pine up front, but the habanero sets in on the finish and warms all the way down. Not as hot and spicy as other similar brews. This one I can drink, but one is enough.

Bottle 355ml. Pours golden with low off-white head. Minimal lacing. Aroma is of peppers, slight malt. Taste is of peppers, hot (extreme) peppers, very slight malt. Palate: Medium carbonation. Medium body [Note that I had a very hard time rating the palate as I could barely dare to take other sips]. Overall: This beer is straight-up gross. Extremely hot/peppery. This is not serious. Burning aftertaste. No complexity to speak of. Stear clear of this one.

UPDATED: AUG 5, 2014 Bottle shared by tom10101, thanks? Pours a strong golden with a light white head that leaves good lacing. Nose is of hot peppers and perfume, hinting just a little to what is to come. Taste is of mexican food, hot, maybe some fruits, moderately bitter I think and not too sweet. Did I say hot? After two sips the heat is almost scalding and pretty unbearable. Would anyone really want to drink a whole bottle of this? Body is medium, carbonation a touch too high maybe (so much spices and heat to be able to tell). Way too much spices in this one, I almost feel like I’ve been trolled. It wasn’t completely bad but it wasn’t drinkable at all so we’ll never know. Avoid at almost all cost.

Bottle (12 oz). Slightly hazy golden/orange with a small white head and little lacing. Aroma is of caramel, citrusy notes and spices/habanero. Taste is very hot and the habanero takes all the place along light caramel and hints of citrus. Medium body. Medium carbonation. Very hot finish. Ever lasting burning aftertaste. Complete lack of balance. Way too hot. Probably one of the mot burning beers I’ve tried so far. Bad.

Tap pour. Appearance is similar to the basic, slightly reduced head. Raw pepper in the back ground on noise. Proper burn on taste. Builds nicely. A half pint is plenty, but surprisingly drinkable.
