Our Sculpin IPA is a great example of what got us into brewing in the first place. After years of experimenting, we knew hopping an ale at five separate stages would produce something special. The result ended up being this gold-medal winning IPA, whose inspired use of hops creates hints of apricot, peach, mango and lemon flavors, but still packs a bit of a sting, just like a Sculpin fish.

On tap at Örebro Ölcafé. Fruity smell with chili and soap. Similar taste. The chli heat is very up front and aggressive. The hops is in the background. A bit soapy. Not something I would start my day with, it took a while to get rid of the chili heat.

Usual "if-you-don’t-like-chili-beers-ignore-this-re preface. I always rate these under the assumption that you like chili beers and rate them compared to other chili beers, not other beers or IPAs.
That being said, I don’t see the point of pretty much ruining Sculpin IPA by adding habaneros. The hops barely break through, and it just seems like a waste of tons of good hops. Not that it has to be unhopped, but Sculpin? I don’t know. Anyways, this stuff is nice! I drank three of them and could have kept going. Spicy, with the characteristic habanero slow-burn. The body is fairly lean and quite dry to really help pronounce the chili, though there is enough malt to not make it too unbalanced. Dry, fiery, peppery, really quite delicious. I think I still like the Serrano Pale a bit more, as that one was just viciously hot, but this is a bit more "toned down". The pepper really helps lighten the beer and keeps it very "refreshing" (these terms are all relative).

Tap at Ballast Point Oak Grove. Pours a lightly hazy golden with a smaller bubbly white head. Aroma of habaneros and citrusy hops. Although pepper really dominates. Flavor is all habanero too! Not my thing at all.

On cask at the PP Carlsbad Real Ale fest. It pours orange with a cream colored head. The aroma is nice with the peppers only playing a minor part to the fresh citrusy hops. The flavor is all dominated by hot peppers. There is some citrus notes in there as it burns your throat on the way down. Its actually a pretty cool beer, but I can’t help but feel like the pepper ruins a classic IPA.

Tap. The look is clear, golden bright colored, with a thin head. The smell is peppers, veggie, light, muted, and ok. The taste is pepper, chiles, spiced, definitely some heat at the back of the mouth. Interesting.

On tap at PH, pours a very hazy copper orange with medium off white head, nice lacing. Aromas of hops, malt, light pepper, vanilla, orange, and pine. Taste is filled with citrus, pine, vanilla and caramel tasting malts, strong peppers. Really gives the throat and back of the mouth a tingle from the habanero. The heat continues to build in other parts of the body as you consume more. Medium to fuller bodied, well carbonated. It was nice but I couldn’t take the heat by then end of the glass. Use half the amt of habanero next time and this thing would be awesome.

Bottle. Pours clear amber with creamy white head. Aroma is bready and cereal malts, spice, floral notes, and some tropical fruit notes. Flavor is hop bitterness forward quickly overtaken by habanero spice with slight malt sweetness and faint citrus notes. Medium body and carbonation.

Tap @William K Frederik. Clear amber color. Medium size, white head, stays. Peppery, nettles, jalapenos, sweet and malty aroma. Jalapenos, malty, sweet, green spring onions, bit milky, stems in taste. I can really feel the heat of peppers in aftertaste. First sip takes time to get used to it, but later I get used to it. Sets my body in fire. But bit messy. Next day in the toilet was interesting. Worth to try brew.

The Sampler, Brooklyn tap: Tried a sampler glass full of this. Pours golden with a white head. Aroma is a combination of habanero pepper and west coast hops, laid upon a malt backbone. Taste is spicy. The habanero does overpower the hops, but by just enough to make the beer interesting. This isn’t something to repeat or even drink an entire glass of, but it is an interesting example of what can be done with the combination of beer and spice.
