COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Sculpin IPA is a great example of what got us into brewing in the first place. After years of experimenting, we knew hopping an ale at five separate stages would produce something special. The result ended up being this gold-medal winning IPA, whose inspired use of hops creates hints of apricot, peach, mango and lemon flavors, but still packs a bit of a sting, just like a Sculpin fish.

Tulip at Tony’s dart away. Good aroma, sweet. Minor pepper. Citrus, orange, grapefruit. Clean golden orange color. Small head that faded quick. Bitter flavor. Medium body, smooth oily creamy mouthfeel. Bitter dry finish. Better that I was anticipating. Heat is good. Not overwhelming. Enjoyable. Finish is my favorite part.

Bottle shared at RBWG 2015! Pours a clear gold with thin bubbly white head. Aroma is peppers over juicy hops. Taste is big on the peppers, damn, woah. Interesting but not as bad as some pepper beers.

On tap at least the brewery. Clear yellow/orange pour with an off white head. Grapefruit hop aromas. Grapefruit hop notes upfront give way too some serious heat from the habaneros. Wowzers. Good body and mouthfeel.

12 ounce bottle poured into a Belgian snifter. Nice apricot yellow color with a finger of off-white head. Big habanero peppers on the aroma along with some light citrus. Tasting notes of habanero and jalapeno peppers, citrus, grassy and floral notes, piney hops. Medium body with a semi-dry and spicy peppery warm finish. Light lip tingling and some burn on the tongue from the peppers but not too bad otherwise as far as heat. Pretty good for what they were going for, the fruit flavors in Sculpin take a backseat for the peppers.

Draft at Jerry’s in Chicago. Well, Sculpin is delicious, I don’t need to talk a lot about that (basically, good hops and low malts). But here you have a well integrated burn form the pepper. Fun stuff, not crazy pepper but nice burn and some light pepper flavor.

On tap at the Ballast Point Tasting Room and Kitchen. A: clear, amber with a semi-durable tan head and limited lacing. Fine clariy. Aroma: habaneros and hops in near equal balance. Flavor: Wow! lots of habanero flavor here and medium-high hotness. The most chili flavor I’ve encountered in a beer, and one of th hottest. Feel: Medium body with soft, medium carbonation. Medium+ heat. O: an exceptional IPA well worth seeking out. Available in 6 packs.

Taster from the Grille Next Door. Deep golden color with a huge sticky white head. Big capsaicin mixed with earthy pine on the nose. The heat lingers coating the throat all the way down. Good in a small dose, glad I got a tiny glass.

Phone rate. Cask at O’Brien’s. Cloudy orange with 1/2 finger off-white head, dissipating to a thick ring rather quickly. Tropical citrus rind nose typical of regular Sculpin, tinge of vegetal notes behind.flavor follows, having a little trouble deciphering between fruity hops and habañero. This does pack substantial heat from the start, and builds throughout the pint, as expected. Probably about at my limit--any more heat would make it unenjoyable. Bitterness peaked at a 6, dry. Medium body with cask carbonation. Could be too hot for some. Burps vegetal. Tasty for the pint I had!

Draft at Mexican Food Factory Marlton. Pours out an attractive slightly more amber color than normal Sculpin with a nice white head. Aroma is of tropical fruits, citrus bitterness, and some light earthy/spicy chili pepper. Pepper is definitely subtle and maybe somewhat turns down the normal hop profile. Taste is where the peppers make their mark. Notes of tropical fruit and citrus hoppy bitterness, and then a spicy/earthy/fruity chili pepper (yes, the wonderful Habenero) comes into play. Luckily the spice is not over done, and despite the popular belief this pepper doesn’t only pack a lot of heat, there is a lot of flavor in there too. The hops meld rather well with the pepper that initially only leaves a slight burn, but definitely stings your lips for minutes after your sip...and if eating spicy food can linger even longer. A great rendition to one of my favorite IPA’s.
