Our Sculpin IPA is a great example of what got us into brewing in the first place. After years of experimenting, we knew hopping an ale at five separate stages would produce something special. The result ended up being this gold-medal winning IPA, whose inspired use of hops creates hints of apricot, peach, mango and lemon flavors, but still packs a bit of a sting, just like a Sculpin fish.

Shocking. Super vegetal and peppery on the nose, with a blast of habanero spice that feels intimidating initially but levels off nicely on the back of the palate. Not getting much fruit here at all however. A stunning execution of the style; still not sure itís my thing, but I respect it.

On tap @ BeerJunction. Pours orangish dark golden with medium white head. Aroma is earthy, citrusy hops with a hint of spicy heat. Taste is clean light caramel malt that is quickly overwhelmed by sharp habanero heat. Hops appear under the spicy heat on the finish, but the peppers never relent in controlling the flavor here. Itís the Sculpin you know and love, with heavy pepper heat laid over it. Definitely unique, but much of the appeal of Sculpin was the light, aromatic, perfectly balanced hops and thatís mostly lost here to the heat.

On draft at The Ginger Man, NYC. The taste is eclipsed by the burning habanero pepper sensation on the palate, which does not add to the flavor, just a lingering burn. Seems the wrong combination for such a quality IPA. A novelty at best.

On tap, clear amber pour with small off white head. Aroma of floral hops, grassy and pepper. Taste of floral hops and then the pepper kicks in and overtakes everything good about this beer. I love spicy hot but this totally is off base. Initial great IPA taste, perfect carbonation and mouthfeel and the habanero takes over in the middle and peppery heat finishes strong and long and dry. Not really my thing.

Bottle from Jess. Pours a golden color with thick white head. Aroma is pretty mild, not really much here, pepper or hoppy goodness. Taste is light, dry, then the pepper hits. Pretty darn spicy. Missing much of the great ipa base, but interesting take on the IPA, which lives up to the name.

From a 12 oz bottle into a 70ís Michelob chalice. Pours like regular Sculpin. A little head but not much; same for lacing. Good Habanero aroma. A little fruit from the hops too. Mouthfeel is moderate with some good carbonation. Taste is habanero peppers and heat. You can taste some of the IPA for the first sip, but after that, itís just blasted out by the heat and Habanero flavor. Iím a big fan of habaneros, so I really liked how their unique flavor was really showcased. That being said, I drank about 2/3 of the bottle and after that, my tastebuds were just shot. Poured the rest. If you can take the spice, share this with a friend and enjoy.

On tap at Blind Tiger. Pours clear gold, has typical hoppy aroma with some citrus and pine, but also has a nice hot pepper aroma, you can almost smell the heat. The pepper really comes through on the taste, although a bit more as heat and less as a peppery flavor. Not as good as classic Sculpin, but an interesting variation that was nice to try.

On tap at Tustin Brewing. Looks like Sculpin, kinda smells like Sculpin, tastes like.... Holy crap that burns!! :). Very interesting twist on one of my favorite beers. It really is hot, but you get used to it after a bit and itís really good with food (hot wings!). Itís kind of hard to pick out the nuances through the heat, but itís the best chili beer Iíve ever had.

On tap in the gas lamp dist. Pours clear light carmel color with thin white head. Aroma is kind of muted from regular sculpin. Flavor is up front heat and hops. Coats the tongue but clears right after with just a lingering heat. I love the combo of ipa and spice. Great beer.
