COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Sculpin IPA is a great example of what got us into brewing in the first place. After years of experimenting, we knew hopping an ale at five separate stages would produce something special. The result ended up being this gold-medal winning IPA, whose inspired use of hops creates hints of apricot, peach, mango and lemon flavors, but still packs a bit of a sting, just like a Sculpin fish.

Tap at Max’s. Pours lightly hazy orange with a medium, frothy white head, short retention with good lacing. Aroma is pine, resin, and citrus hops, habenero, and cracker malt. Flavor is spicy peppers, heavy hops and bitterness, supporting malt and a dry finish. Medium body and carbonation.

Sweet rich fleshy fruit aroma. Smooth sweet palate. Powerful burn, but not totally mental. I actually quite liked it, but it is a silly gimmick

On at Capone’s. Poured a golden color with a white head. Yep, there’s habanero in this one. The hoppy IPA was in the background, but this one ended in too much of a spicy burn for me to finish.

GABF. Pours a hazy orange appearance with an off white head. Citrusy, grapefruity, a bit piney, slightly peppery aroma. Juicy citrusy, rich grapefruity flavor that shows more of the pepper with a moderate burn on the finish. Honestly, this sounded like the greatest thing since sliced bread to me but the spiciness was a bit dull and didn’t add what I thought it could. I would love to try it again someday, however.

Cask at Rattle N Hum in NYC. The pour is a flattish, room temp, clear orange amber with a medium, white fluffy head. Nice lace for cask beer. Nose is very assuming...regular Sculpin character: very caramel heavy, orange sections, sweet grapefruit, citrus hops. Nice balance. Would assume it is regular Sculpin if you were trying to prank someone. Taste...right up front it is silky, rich, and caramel heavy with quenching citrus hops and orange juice. After one second or so some major capsaicin heat comes through. HOT TAMALE TONIGHT! Ears on fire, clear your sinuses, phlegm building in the back of the throat. Still, nice vanilla and candy beneath the hot pepper. Even bitter dark chocolate still apparent. In summary, still recognizably a great IPA...still very Sculpin in essence but extremely spicy at near rip your head off levels as far as beers go. Hilarious, very enjoyable, I finished the entire pint very easily and had a blast doing so.

On tap. Pours with a hazed golden body and a white head. A good bit of diacetyl in the aroma, butterscotch. Light hops, some pepper, grainy. Flavors of diacetyl, some heat and burn and really minimal tropical fruit hoppiness. People who have had this before told me it tasted better previously.

Draft at Capone’s. Did this one horizontally with the regular, and this one has an intense habanero flavor thet melds well with the crisp hoppiness and great balance, but the heat does take center stage to a degree that prevents it from exceeding Sculpin. I guess my point is this: This is a great hoppy spicy beer for hot pepper lovers, but most will prefer the Sculpin much more. Nothing against this beer, it is one of the best spicy beers I ever had, but it isn’t Sculpin (and I know it isn’t trying to be, and I’m fine with that).

2013-04-20. Modest aroma, light spice, hops. 7+ Flavour is briefly lovely, citrus hops are a glimpse of something. Then burny... jeebus f-ck! Oh god, why did I drink this! Average palate. A perfectly good IPA ruined. On tap at Coles, Buffalo

Sample at GABF 10/11/2012, thanks to Bluemeow76 for assistance with note-taking. Dark amber color with a medium white head that disappears quickly, and short strings of lace. Peppers and hops in the nose. Medium body with a moderately spicy pepper flavor with some hops and malt behind it. Lingering spicy aftertaste. Decent beer, although I drank this too early in the session and had to flush with a lot of water immediately after due to the spiciness. Decent overall.

On tap at the Blind Tiger during their Captain Lawrence event. Pours a hazed gold. Heat, sweet pine and toast. Sweet and hoppy. Warm and spicy, with slow heat. Very smooth and light lingering heat on the finish. This was great.
