Our Sculpin IPA is a great example of what got us into brewing in the first place. After years of experimenting, we knew hopping an ale at five separate stages would produce something special. The result ended up being this gold-medal winning IPA, whose inspired use of hops creates hints of apricot, peach, mango and lemon flavors, but still packs a bit of a sting, just like a Sculpin fish.

Pours deep orange with a medium white head. Smells peppery a citrus undertone. Taste is lots of pepper heat, hints of bitterness, a touch of citrus. Medium-bodied with a wet texture and average mouth-carbonation, Ballast Point Habanero Sculpin finishes with a tangy, lingering heat.

This beer brings the HEAT! The first time I tried it, I needed a glass of cold water to chase it. Not as hoppy as I expected. Iíve yet to find a chili beer that matches this oneís intensity. My favorite beer right now!

12 oz bottle- Pours clear orange golden with a one finger bone white head that slowly reduces. Aroma is WOW, spicy peppers, It smells like fresh picked peppers, not getting much else and thatís okay with me. The taste is habanero peppers, fresh picked, medium heat burn that builds with each sip. The dry bitterness of the hops cuts through the heat nicely, I love this beer! Grapefruit and other citrus flavors are there, you do have to search for them through the peppery spiciness. Finally a brewery thatís not afraid to showcase a hop pepper without feeling like they have to mellow it out for the masses. Keep this one flowing, it will be a staple in my fridge until i canít find anymore in this area!

Looks very much like regular Sculpin, whose orange color also coincidentally happen to match the skin of a Habanero pepper. The head atop the clear body was two to three fingers thick. foamy, and durable. The aroma was very hoppy and did not bring to mind any kind of pepper, as I could detect grapefruit and orange rind. On deeper inhaling there possibly was a hint of chili pepper, or may be it was just my imagination. The taste however had a very definite pepper kick to it. The Habanero was once considered the hottest pepper in the world, and while it has since given up that crown, it was still king of this beer. The pepper head was clearly evident in every sip, forcing the normally dominant citric hops to play second fiddle. It was quite one dimensional, and it was glorious. The feel was medium thick, with a pepper burn at the end of each sip. This was not quite a harmonious pairing like the Grapefruit Sculpin. Instead it was a showcase for pepper lovers.

Excellent beer, tho I like the Grapefruit version more. This does have the very intriguing aroma with the fruity hop malt caramel thing. Flavor loses almost all of the fruit and gets fairly dry with mostly malty hop and a little capsicum taste. Body is great and the heat from the Habenero is just right. Good drinking brew.

"Wow. Ballast does it again. One of my very favorite IPAs spiced up enough to notice, but not so much it takes away ANYTHING from the hoppy tropical goodness that is Sculpin. Light peppers on the nose, a little more in the flavor. Sublime!!"

Bottle. Aroma is sweet and hoppy with a hint of peppers that goes away after a few whiffs. Hazy Amber. Very strong hot pepper flavor the blends beautifully with the Luciousness of the sculpin IPA. Expertly and wonderfully done.

This beer is not for everyone but I happen to love it. It has a nice kick to it and burns a bit on the way down. Two or three of these are sufficient. If you donít like the heat then the regular Sculpin is for you. I appreciate Ballast Pointís diversity and creativity. Keep up the good work Brewmasters! ZPirate
