COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Sculpin IPA is a great example of what got us into brewing in the first place. After years of experimenting, we knew hopping an ale at five separate stages would produce something special. The result ended up being this gold-medal winning IPA, whose inspired use of hops creates hints of apricot, peach, mango and lemon flavors, but still packs a bit of a sting, just like a Sculpin fish.

Draft sample. Gold in colour with medium carbonation. Aromas are of sharp citrus juices, light malt, and a dusting of pepper. An interesting flavor progression: grapefruit and lime, followed by incendiary (yet very clear) Habanero, then a mix of leafy hops and pepper heat on the finish. The heat is a little much, but you still get a sense of the beer behind it. A half pint serving would have been ideal, but managed to finish a whole pint with little difficulty. I tried to search out the base beer, but came up empty on this trip.

Draft at friendly Greek. Pours golden with an inch of white foam. Has some citrus on the nose. Big fucking habanero on the tongue. Huge. Real, real spicy. Lingers for hours. It is an acquired taste but itís actually some flavor even as it melts your tongue.

#2! At the grove. Pint. Looks like regular Sculpin. Smells like IPA and cayenne. The heat is interesting, if a bit much. Not better than regular Sculpin, but different and good. Definitely gonna try this with one of my home brewed IPAs, and stouts, and...

Draft. Pours gold with a thin white head. Piney hoppy and fruity aroma with light peppery notes. The flavor has piney hops and spicy peppery heat. Heat lasts through the finish. Solid stuff, but I like just the base sculpin better.

Cask @ Blind Tiger. Orange pour with no real head. While it is nice to try a different sculpin, this is essentially great ipa plus hot, for those who like peppers this is a must, although bit too hot for me. A couple ounces were enough for me.

On cask at the PP Carlsbad Real Ale fest. It pours orange with a cream colored head. The aroma is nice with the peppers only playing a minor part to the fresh citrusy hops. The flavor is all dominated by hot peppers. There is some citrus notes in there as it burns your throat on the way down. Its actually a pretty cool beer, but I canít help but feel like the pepper ruins a classic IPA.

On tap at Urge in RB/Poway on the Tap Takeover night. They had 25different brews from Ballast Point that day. It is exactly what it says to be. Sweet tropical hoppy Sculpin with the warming to sharp bite of Habenero. If you like this type of beer, itís well done. If you donít like these, you wonít like this one. I liked the levels of heat to sweet on this one.

On tap @ OíBriens - Pours a hazy light golden color with a small white head. Flavor and aroma is mostly Habanero. You can taste the Sculpin, but the pepper really leaves a bite in the finish. Iím talking spice and heat. I drank the whole glass. Interesting.

From cask. Pours clear golden orange with a small white head. Aroma is initially mild fruity with a solid chili bite in the nose. Burning chili, mild sweet malty and caramelish. Burning into the finish. HOT.

Tap at Blind Tiger. Clear golden pour. Very hoppy with citrus and pine. Nice spicey pepper, burn on the tongue. Light caramel and sweet, some dryness. Nice.
