COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our Sculpin IPA is a great example of what got us into brewing in the first place. After years of experimenting, we knew hopping an ale at five separate stages would produce something special. The result ended up being this gold-medal winning IPA, whose inspired use of hops creates hints of apricot, peach, mango and lemon flavors, but still packs a bit of a sting, just like a Sculpin fish.

On draft at GABF 2012. Pours a hazy orange with a white head. Nose is big caramel with some pine, citrus, and earthy peppers with hints of burn in the nose. Flavor is nice malt, big citrus, and strong earthy peppers with some burn bordering on impolite. Medium in body and an interesting twist on Sculpin.

Sample at Khyber with Vin, Pat and Janine. Poured a clean gold with average white head and lacing. Aroma of citrus and piney hops with mild pepper aromas. Really interesting drink. Sweet malts hit you at first, then really fresh habaneros, with a slightly bitter hoppy pine and citrus finish. The pepper taste is strong but I didn’t find the heat as off-putting as others. Interesting drink but I think the sample was enough for me.

Tap. Pours clear amber with a large light beige head that dissipates slowly with nice lacing. Aroma is citrus, light chili, pine. Flavor is habanero dominated, some hoppy notes, lightly sweet, light bitter, medium heat. Burning finish. Interesting, but regular sculpin is so much better.

Draft at Capone’s. Did this one horizontally with the regular, and this one has an intense habanero flavor thet melds well with the crisp hoppiness and great balance, but the heat does take center stage to a degree that prevents it from exceeding Sculpin. I guess my point is this: This is a great hoppy spicy beer for hot pepper lovers, but most will prefer the Sculpin much more. Nothing against this beer, it is one of the best spicy beers I ever had, but it isn’t Sculpin (and I know it isn’t trying to be, and I’m fine with that).

On tap at Hurricane Grill in Vero Beach. Sculpin is one of my favorite IPA’s so I was expecting something special. Pepper aroma is subtle on the nose, but on the palate, WOW! I have never had a spiced beer with such a peppery finish. This wouldn’t be a good beer to enjoy with hot wings, it would be like trying to put out a fire with gasoline.

UPDATED: APR 2, 2013 On tap at pizza plant. Pours an orangey amber gold with a nice white head. Smell isn?t strong other than the hops and some sweetness. Tastes bitter hops with some syrupy sweetness. The finish heats up and gets spicy! It?s nice and unique.

On tap at Hunah Day. nose is mostly straight sculpin, hop explosion with a faint spice to it. Taste is much more spicy, extremely peppery and hot in the finish with the juicy hops up front. Spice is so strong and lingers.

Tap at Blind Tiger shared by Maxxdaddy (thanks!). Golden orange pour. Aroma and flavor are both pure pepper: habanero backed by green bell. Legitimate spiciness without being intolerable. I consider this treatment a success.

A - Served a golden-orange color with a thin layer of white head atop. The head faded fairly quickly leaving behind a touch of lace. S - Aroma is a mix of sweet caramel malts and grassy/piney hops. The pepper is noticeable in the background but not too strong. T - Starts off with a mix of caramel sweetness and piney hops and bitterness. There is some growing heat in the background from the pepper, but not too strong. Through the middle, the heat grows a bit along with stronger bitterness. As the beer finishes, the heat explodes and takes over and lingers for quite a while. M - Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation. It feels pretty smooth and super hot, and keeps your tongue on fire for a while. D - Very much a sipping beer. It is so hot that if you drink it any faster it would be painful. Not really what I would call balanced, but a very interesting beer.

Cask at Rattle N Hum in NYC. The pour is a flattish, room temp, clear orange amber with a medium, white fluffy head. Nice lace for cask beer. Nose is very assuming...regular Sculpin character: very caramel heavy, orange sections, sweet grapefruit, citrus hops. Nice balance. Would assume it is regular Sculpin if you were trying to prank someone. Taste...right up front it is silky, rich, and caramel heavy with quenching citrus hops and orange juice. After one second or so some major capsaicin heat comes through. HOT TAMALE TONIGHT! Ears on fire, clear your sinuses, phlegm building in the back of the throat. Still, nice vanilla and candy beneath the hot pepper. Even bitter dark chocolate still apparent. In summary, still recognizably a great IPA...still very Sculpin in essence but extremely spicy at near rip your head off levels as far as beers go. Hilarious, very enjoyable, I finished the entire pint very easily and had a blast doing so.
